  • Low budget VX110 engine tear down

hey guys, its been a while since iv posted on here. Anyway my last post was about the engine having low compression and how i did a leak down test on it and it was bad. I have since torn down the engine and have so far found some damage, including all the bearings will need to be replaced as well as head gasket and I'm thinking of doing rings as well. Is it necessary to completely disassemble the cylinder head for proper inspection? I'm this far into it and iv already found some of those "tappets"? (little cups sitting of the valve springs) are stuck in there. The cam journal seems to be worn in a weird way that has got some of them stuck in. Anyway is there anything else that is perhaps common to wear out that i should replace while i have this thing apart?

    thanks,

There is no such thing as a "low budget" teardown.

Seriously? off course this engine need complete tear down, all valves out, head and valves clean up, good valve lapping and replace bad ones, cut corroded seats, pistons inspection, new sets of rings, , cylinders honing if necessary then put back together with good parts, cheap engine rebuild does not work at all.

Let me clarify when i say "low budget engine tear down" i mean it in a way where i have to be budget conscious. And i disagree with cheap engine rebuilds do not work, of coarse they can if they are done properly. Just because you have not replaced everything in the engine does not mean it will not work, and work for a long time. Im not going to be putting in used or cheap knock off parts. Im a auto mechanic that is no stranger to engine rebuilds, the only reason i asked about the cylinder head was to know if you had seen that before and if i may need to find a new head considering the way the cam journals have been worn..

Any picture of cam journal? as they are machined into the head it does not take much wear to have the head trashed, usually when these cam journals are damaged or grooved it means big lack of lubrication, and usually all crank and rod bearings are shot before crank journals.
If you post pictures of your engine internal parts it will help a lot.

alright sorry about the long delay here but i was finally able to tear the head completely down and get a good look. I had a problem with about 6 of these valve buckets being stuck on the spring due to the cam journal being worn, i managed to get them out. The head gasket is completely shot as you can see, combustion gasses leaking into the cylinder next to it. what are your guys thoughts on this head? i have not lapped the valves to inspect the valve seat condition.Click image for larger version

That Head is trashed. You can not repair the cam journals. I would fine another good used head. Rob

Like Rob said, head is trashed, clearly lack of lubrication killed cam journal, camshafts , crank and rod bearings are in the same shape i guess, then oil pump and discharge valves need to be taken out and inspected. big job ahead for you my friend, best luck.

alright while i look for a head for this thing ill post along about the interesting stuff in the motor.
the bottom end seems to be okay, it will be needing rod and main bearings. i took the oil pump apart and found the screen full of crud! any other suggestions for finding a head? sbt shows they have a exchange one for $500..

It was such a low budget that he left it apart and never put it back together.

They are simple like lawn mowers, simply replace the engine just like a lawn mower.
