  • 701 will not idle

I have a 701 that all of a sudden decided not to idle. It starts right up and throttle response is great. It shuts down as soon as I pull the safety lanyard. I checked idle screw and made sure the throttle butterfly are closed. I did a pressure test and found a very slight air leak so I tore the motor apart and installed new crank seals and gaskets. It started up with no difficulty but still does not idle. I decided to rebuild the carb, but there was no change. Could there be a problem with the CDI? What else should I check?

What is the current setting on the low speed screw?

Throttle plate should NOT be fully closed. What happens when you turn the idle stop screw up some?

        Re: 701 will not idle

Sorry for not replying to your help, life got in the way.
The engine starts easily, but revs way to high, whether in the water or out. I have adjusted the idle screw without any change. I also adjusted the low speed screw without any change. The low speed screw is an 1-1/4 turns open. I have rebuilt the carb thinking possibly a check valve had failed. However, that did not change the high speed startup. I also, performed a pressure test to verify there wasn't an air leak. I have started the engine and placed my hand over the carb opening, covering 75% of the carb, and was able to slow the engine down. I'm not sure what that tells me.
I'm at a loss what to check next.

Low speed screw on a single carb 61x needs to be a minimum of 1 3/4 turns out from closed. They typically don't need more than 2 1/2 turns out from closed.

Thank you. I will adjust the low speed screw and give it a try

              Re: 701 will not idle

I'm still attempting to resolve the high speed idle issue upon startup. To recap, engine starts easily, but revs way to high, whether in the water or out. I have adjusted the throttle plate slightly open to closed without change. I have adjusted the low speed screw from 1-1/4 to 1-3/4 turns out from closed without any change. I have rebuilt and made sure carb is clean. I also, performed a pressure test held 6 psi for 30 min when I released pressure. The problem occurred upon starting after the ski had been sitting for 2 weeks. Prior to that it ran flawlessly. I still think it must be something with the carb, but what? Could it possibly be a bad CDI?

So now your ski idles too fast? (Were as originally it would not idle correct?)

This could be from a lean condition, (Air leak, carb issue etc, improperly adjusted carb, fuel supply problem, etc.)

You say you have adjusted so the throttle plate is closed? Do you have slack in the throttle cable then? I am wondering if your cable is not adjusted properly, and not allowing the throttle to close fully?

CDI has NOTHING to do with idle.

You also say you performed a pressure test, is this on the engine? or carb?

                  Re: 701 will not idle

                  Thank you for your assistance.
The engine starts easily, but immediately revs to the moon. I have performed a pressure test on the engine, which indicated no leaks (6psi for 30min). I have rebuilt the carb and performed a pop-off pressure test, 21 to 22psi. Prior to this issue the ski was running perfectly, easy starting, nice idle, no bogging on acceleration. It sat for 2 weeks and when I went to start the ski reved to the moon.
I checked the throttle plate position, it is closed with no slack in the throttle cable. The problem must be an air leak but where? I have inspected the carb for cracks or leaks but found nothing. I guess I need to find another carb and swap out the existing carb and see what happens. Any suggestions before buying a carb?
