  • Help needed. Spun the gear off the end of my driveshaft. 1989 650sx Kawasaki

Flipped over and throttle went wide open when it was upside down and impeller was out of the water. The gear on the end of the driveshaft somehow came unthreaded and fell to hull. While it did that it broke a piece of the one on crankshaft. Do you have to pull motor completely apart to replace that aluminum gear?

Nope , you can do the “ ol poly rope in the cylinder trick “ , use a pipe wrench , and spin off the old coupler , change rubber damper too

Second person that’s said the rope in cylinder trick. Guess I have to figure out how to do that. Thanks.

It's an OLD mechanics trick. You bring the piston up1/2 way or more, then shove in a couple feet of 1/4" rope through the spark plug hole. Then as the piston comes up it smashes the rope in there and 'locks' the motor up so you can unscrew the coupler. About 45 seconds of propane heat on the center of the coupler is sometimes (not always) necessary........MAKE SURE there is no gas or fumes present!!!

Are the motor mounts still intact?

I have only ever seen that when the motor stops suddenly. Did the motor seize? or Does it still run?
