Re: 1992 Boston Whaler Rage w/ Yamaha WaveRunner III Jet Drive

My 92 Rage has less than 100 hours on it. Stock 650 for now, but a modded 701 is going in shortly.

With the stock motor and clean original aluminum prop, and pump all stock, she GPS'd 30-31mph with just me driving.

Then I tried a few different pitch stainless props from my parts hoard, and I also modded an intake grate from a 701 wr3 (has the curved rear ramp and smaller opening = more pump preload pressure at speed, and I cut out the 2 center bars), and I also installed 701 wr3 ride plate wedges. So just these pump mods but still a 100% stock 650 motor, and I went 35.7mph, with much much better acceleration and half the time to plane speed.

If I can get the Rage over 35 mph i would be happy with that result. I am thinking of starting with a fresh engine and If I do so I would want a direct drop in replacement 701. What engine setup are you installing?

Re: 1992 Boston Whaler Rage w/ Yamaha WaveRunner III Jet Drive

I'm aiming for 40mph with just the driver. Would like to achieve low 30s at least with 4 adults aboard.

I have a large storage garage for my skis (many super jets and a couple sit downs) and hoard of spare parts that includes about 7 or 8 low hour 701 and 760 motors. The one thing I don't want to do with my Rage is cut the hood or floor (like I have seen some do) to make clearance for the OEM 62t or 64x exhausts. Noise is also a factor, as even with a stock 650 the motor at cruising speed makes conversations impossible. Looking like my plan is to use a 61x motor with westcoast head (premium pump gas compression) along with a coffmans sizzler pipe from my wr3 and a tdr waterbox from a wr3 (will just fit in place of the OEM fiberglass whaler tube shaped waterbox) - may just need to raise the ebox a couple inches. Also adding an inline resonator from a Polaris after the waterbox, to quiet things down and give me somewhere to dump the water from the pipe bypass without adding a pisser fitting. Should get me right about 75-80hp with much more torque and similar fuel consumption to the 650. Might also eventually add a wet jet single 46mm set up with built in reed stuffers at some point.

I have a larger drive thru storage in the front of Holiday Shores but unfortunately not full of motors. Great for working on all the toys out of the elements. Leaving my skis stock all these years leaves my at a disadvantage for upgrading this as you described as a "bathtub". My thoughts are to immediately upgrade to ss impeller, ss wear ring, ss stator and to install a direct 701 drop in. Next off season fine tune and add any other mods/upgrades deemed necessary. Looking forward to a great summer on the river!

Know of anyone with the wood location diagrams? Thinking of attachments and would like to know where the wood is for solid installs.
I know it's an older thread, but I thought this was the best place to post the wood locating diagram I have for my 1993 Yamaha Rage. Also included is the factory option list. Both were in the original documentation package I got with the boat. Click image for larger version

Thanks for posting those. I thought the 48qt cooler was the correct size but I stand corrected. 54qt on the way.

                Hey All,
                First day Here!!
Born and raised in Wisconsin (near Lake Geneva) I relocated to Pensacola a year ago. Just picked up a '93 BW Rage to mostly enjoy getting out on Perdido Bay, our backyard. It's brackish water so I'll be looking at upgrading some of the original Yamaha aluminum drive parts with aftermarket stainless ones. Thank you to all the info here!!!

I have a 1992 Boston Whaler Jet Boat along with a Waverunner with an exact replacement engine and parts in great shape. Living on Lake Talquin, Tallahassee, Fl I was going to refurb it, but at 76, I realize that is not going to happen. If anyone interested contact me [email protected]

Wow, thank you for the manual!

I've read several people post that trim tabs really helped. I haven't really felt like mine could benefit from them. Maybe someday I'll give them a try.
I put Smart tabs on mine. It needed the light 10lb shock though. It makes the boat pull up on a plane easily and and avoid the porpoise effect. Set it an forget it.

I went with a 61x motor as well. It will go fast enough loaded down. The major problem with these apparently is water intrusion in the hulls that will really weigh them down. I keep my hull sealed properly and in a garage when not used.

They have great deal on SOLAS YQS-SV-144/74 pumps right now on Amazon for $325. I couldn't resist and ordered one.

After tearing out my unit to inspect bearings and impeller I decided to replace the wear ring with a Delrin unit from Impros. I prefer it over stainless . Impeller wear and damage can definitely cause loss of power and cavitation, especially when there is gaps between the wear ring and impeller. The revised pump housing with a Delrin liner costs about $150 to your door and can be found various places like SBT and Impros. These allow you to replace the wear ring in about an hour for about $35 down the road.

                          This is a great post. I have a 92 Whaler rage with a 701.
Here is a website I put up about 7 or 8 years ago that is similar.

This site is about some options to improve a Boston Whaler Rage boat, and the work I have performed on this particular Yamaha powered early model. I bought this Boston Whaler last Summer (2012) over in Spokane and so far have had a
