  • Mach 6 X2 build

Sine all attempts at reviving the X2 forum at the X have failed ,I am moving this build over here.
This is a hull I got in Gasden from TNGIBBS,I have many ideas I have been kicking around, some are from other peoples builds, some all mine, first and foremost that tower has to go.I am tired of trying to dig around back there, next I want the tower to become part of the hood.I bought a tower brace from Jetskihaven yesterday and that will incorporate into this build.

Here are my thoughts, first I need more room in the engine bay, there is a possibility that a 951 can go in here,I am not saying it will but it just might, also the hood on these weighs a ton.I saw somewhere 27 lbs.One of the glass hoods I saw weighs 9 lbs,so if you can lop off 18lbs with just the hood you should be able to lop off even more with a one piece hood and tower assy, especially if its done out of carbon fiber.

The tower brace will be attached to the hood in the front and will be the front hood hinge,I have to go direct steer like on the Jap hull to do this but that doesn't seem that difficult to me,the trim will also have to be reworked for this style hood to work, again no biggie.

I will probably be cutting and slicing some parts from the other hull or I may just build some molds and go that route.Don't expect any rapid progress on this money is tight and I have way more time than money these days.

I was thinking I can use some of that structural foam product and shape it to fit inside the hull .Then I can make my seal lip out of that. They use the same stuff now for plastic molding in high dollar building construction,my brother scored me a ton of scraps from his construction site.I can attach it to the hull with screws and use the router to make the new seal lip, glass it in with epoxy and a few layers of glass and I should be golden Pieces are cut heated with the propane torch, there are a few burn spots there, those will be ground off before I glue the pieces in and glass it over. Then it is screwed to the hull,I just used drywall screws because these will have to come off the hull several times before its over, the screws will also be used when epoxying the pieces to the hull.

I have to do a little more shaping then gauge block it,the height will have to be the same all the way around then I can run the router down it and complete the seal lip portion.I will then lay a few layers of glass over it and call it a done deal, there will have to be some creative forming along the transition areas at the corners and the rear as well.

The body work is childs play ,well at least for me it is,the fun part will be figuring out the steering and the trim I suspect. Then we get to the really fun part making a new hood, yep you heard right,I am going to chop up a hood glue it to the tower piece to configure a plug then make a mold and just make a new lightweight hood.It will be an all new carbon fiber hood, the old tower and and old hood will be chopped up for a plug ,serious weight savings no matter how you look at it.

Second there is a tower brace going in there,it will be attached to the hood and tower section,it should greatly improve the strength and rigidty of the piece, actually it should be damn near bulletproof.

Third, that hull is about a 1/4 inch thick in the tower section,I don't think its going anywhere,by using carbon I can maintain the strength and greatly decrease the weight,I do plan to reinforce the hull areas with carbon or kevlar also the pvc material that I am using for the seal lip areas adds unbelievable strength and rigidity when used as a core material with just regular glass ,even more so with carbon fiber.

Fourth I plan to take the stock braces and rework them to attach to the rear sides of the ski, that should add some strength there and prevent flex since it triangulates the load to the bottom of the ski.

Fifth its a flatwater ski,its not like I will be jumping ten foot waves with it and I surely will never ride as well or as hard as Pete does.I have usually worked it out in my head for months before I ever make the first cut.__________________

I was looking at the rear braces today,I will be using either two right side or two left side braces and making a new piece to weld to the top, possibly going under the hood lip area and attaching to the hull there, looks very promising so far and should add needed support to the under seat area.
Goody box arrived today from Jetskihaven,I went ahead and installed it,just to make sure it would work as I had planned, and of course it did,now I need to make a trip to the local jetski junkyard for a beater hood to modify. Notice I flipped the front part that attaches under the hood hinge and the brace is also the front hood hinge.

          Re: Mach 6 X2 build

I still have some work to do on that front hinge arrangement,I can either I leave it like that and cut the hood seal at both sides of it or try mounting it below and extending it out some, not sure which way thats going just yet ,I will know more when I have a hood to play with.
I looked at the front hinge arrangement again today and reversed it back to its stock location,I can't get it to open far enough to suit my tastes even after drilling new mounting holes. So I started looking at other options, it appears I can just cut out a small section of the sealing lip out of the hood and just go around the front bracket-hood hinge,if my measurements are correct there is exactly enough room to do this.

The front bracket will have to be reworked quite a bit,John had them made very beefy so here is plenty of material to work with there.I also have to redo that pin arrangement that has to go it takes up too much room and I need as little clearance as possible on the sides of that bracket to keep the water out. This also solves another problem as the MSD plate mounts to a plate below the stock hood hinge ,now it can remain there without making a new plate.I will post some pics of the reworked bracket when I am done with it.

Here is a pic of the modified rear brackets,I still have to bend up the curved top pieces that attach it to the hull, they will attach right at the lip area, that should be one of the strongest parts of the hull when completed,my friend who tig welds this stuff up is going to be getting another visit soon.I also modded up a bilge bracket from an XPL,its bolted to the left side of the bearing housing which is the right side in the picture, no more gluing down bilge pumps for me,I am done wit it.

              Re: Mach 6 X2 build

I had some free time today so I gauge blocked the pieces, ground them down to the line I scribed with the gauge block and routed out for the hull seal lip,the routing was a ***** because I had to freehand it,it turned out pretty well I think.

I mounted the pieces onto the hull with epoxy and screwed it back together,Then I test fit the hood seal,I must have done good because the stock hood seal goes on perfectly. The hull lip is kind weak and flimsy at this point but when I get some more resin I am wrapping it with carbon fiber, that should do the trick!

Thanks to Mad scientist I now have some carbon fiber to play with but I am out of resin at the moment so that sucks,I have an order in for three gallons , that should hold me for a while.I am also waiting on a hood I got from X2 guy which I will use to complete the plug for the hood mold.At any rate when the resin gets here it on like bubble gum on a shoe.

Sweet project, I was kinda watching it over at the X but I'm just to lazy to become a member so I'm glad you moved it over here. Do you know what you are going to do for the steering yet?

Direct steer attached to the Jetskihaven brace,I don't know which cable yet I have plenty to choose from here though,I am sure one will work. There are some pics of the Jap setup on the X somewhere,It is an arm that attaches to the stock steering setup and goes back across the hull to the left side, just one of many parts that will have to be custom fabbed for this build.
