1991 Kawasaki Sport Cruiser JL650 Restore

    Greetings!

I recently purchased a 1991 Kawi Sport Cruiser. I have searched this site and have found little on this vintage ski. There was one post which was actually a poll on "What's the worst PWC", and the SC was listed.

I purchased this ski because it is an oddity. For those who do not know, it's the only jet ski I know of that has side-by-side seating. I actually found out about it from a picture I saw on a Canadian kawasaki jet ski museum web site.

I bought mine on EBAY, for $330 with the option on a double trailer for $200 more. I go to pick it up and find out it has been lying on the ground next to the trailer for seven years! I've got to re-do the entire hull underside because this idiot didn't know anything about watercraft. The engine probably has less thab 20 hours on it. The idiot took the engine out (cutting the stator wires) and didn't remember finding any shims.
When I re-installed the motor - without any shims - and measured it the drive was exactly perfect! I guess the odds are that SOME bodies might end up not needing shims but still....
The other notable aspect of the ski is the color combo. I think that is at the root of the stigma concerning this ski. It came in two colors: Crybaby blue and barbie pink. The graphics were horrendous. I got a pink one.
I take three hours to put it back together and hit the lake. There is alot of corrosion in the pump, but I go anyways.
It's got the pick-up of my Js550 with a milled head! It's still short on the top end, but with the old aluminum prop and stock exhaust I'm impressed.
GPS got 32.4 with the carb sputtering. I don't trust the oil injector, so I used premix too.
This thing is the fastest golf cart I've ever ridden on a lake! It couldn't be tipped over, it slides at whim, it's got good accelleration, and it's based on the 650 engine, so there's upgrades available. The lady loves it.
I've got a Coffman's exhaust coming, and a Solas prop. I am re-surfacing the entire ski, and when I'm done it's gonna look like a little race car. I've even located the 1968 Corvette tail light lenses for the back.

Here's a link to a folder with some pics of how it looked when I picked it up, and how it looks with some new paint. ANd it has pics of the next two mods: A Coffman's pipe and a SOLAS impeller.

I used FUSION paint by Krylon. It works great on plastic. It did make the mats kinda sticky, but I'm gonna replace that with HYDROTURF next month. The white is just cheap paint until I can re-work every imperfection on the hull.
That's FUSION on the rails. Really brought them back to life.

The yellow looks kinda neat.I have the aqua green and purple combo on min.I installed a 750 engine but with the stock exhaust system. It is much faster now looking at putting a ex system off a 750 sts on it next along with a stainless impeller and intake grate.

You found an aftermarket intake grate for one of these? And feel free to post any pics of your Sport Cruiser!

I'm so glad to hear that somebody else is having fun with an sc too. I love mine. I've only had it a short while but we've been at the lake every weekend since we got it. I am hooked!
I saw your pictures. Now i feel lucky, i found one in much better shape than yours was. The yellow and white looks cool. But i dont mind the stock pink colors. But i'm a goyl, so that make sense

    Laserman,
Great to see you having fun with the SC, and bringing one back from the brink of junkatude in the process. As you know, I've got an "orphan" ski of my own that I am fond of, so I applaud your efforts.

I always thought the "Super Coupe" was cool, but I have never ridden one, so there are a couple of things I've always wondered about it:
    1. Isn't it a jarring ride in a chop? That's a pretty flat, wide hull, and there's no way to get your legs under you to absorb the bouncing; I would think that waves would pound your tailbone and rattle ya all the way up your spine.
    2. How difficult is it to board in deep water, and what's the technique? I can't imagine trying to crawl up the side, and there doesn't seem to be an easy way to board from the rear.
