    cylinder head grooves, Popular Science Article

    I don't know if anybody caught this article in popular science a few months back

    It seems like quite a few of you have an extra cylinder head lying around, I wondered if anybody thought about trying this with one of our 2 cylinder engines.

    I don't think you can simply scratch up your 2 stroke domes and move one. The drawings seemed to have a more "parabolic arch" shaped combustion chamber.

    Interesting article.

    Yeah and there has been a long discussion about the swirl domes, pros/cons, belief/disbelief one whether or not they work. The difference that comes to mind is the swirl is still smooth and maybe would not creat as turbulent of an atmosphere in the dome but I really have no idea about either, just seemed like something somebody could try with an old nasty head and a dremel.

    I'm pretty skeptical if nothing else because it just seems too simple, why hasn't it been done before?

    Anybody else?

    Grooves and ridges in the combustion chamber are bad. The jagged pieces of metal will be hotter than the surrounding cylinder wall and cause detonation. Swirled domes are more complex than hacking at a head with a dremel. I didn't read much of the article, but from the picture that guy was tinkering with a 4 cycle engine. 4 cycles have a valve between the intake charge and the combustion chamber. In our engines, once the intake air/fuel mix has passed the reed valves and is being sucked into the cylinder, nothing is in its way and can pretty much spread to all parts of the combustion chamber.
    Reuse it if you can, fix it if you can't, make one if you have to, but only buy one as a last resort.

    The article mentions working on two-strokes as well as four-strokes.
