    Re: Through Hull depth finder-FXHO

Riverdad, what brand of depth finder did you use and what type of marine sealant did you use to glue the transducer down with? Thanks

    Re: Through Hull depth finder-FXHO

    Update,
I used a silicone marine glue. The finder read, but very random numbers that constantly changed. My neighbor is a gearhead physics teacher and said that if my silicone is too "rubbery", it will absorb and,or rebound the signal making readings very random. I think Anthony's position is great(single layer hull there). I have now gone to a slow cure epoxy that cures over 20 hours and have placed it in the pump well inside the little rim.
Tried and failed list:1. super glue
    2. 5 minute epoxy-(had to try it)
    3. 90 minute epoxy in 2 diff places
    4. clear household glue in 2 places
    5. silicone sealent
    6. 20 hour epox- this is where I am now. My fingers are crossed. I know this transducer works because I put one in my FX140 with 5 minute Epoxy and it works well at 30 mph! Maby, my silicone I chose dries way to "rubbery" and Anthony's dried hard.(RiverDad)
Im gettin frustrated- 6 diff. glues in 8 diff.locations!

The slow cure epoxy might be the ticket. Norcross recommends that. They also have pictures of a waverunner with the install. I beleive it was an fx 140. I wonder if Yamaha changed the hull in some way when they went to the Fx 160? Looks the same to me. Maybe the transducer must be pointed straight down and not on an a slight angle with the hull. I will try the polyutherane glue when the weather is better and I can work from my dock.

    Re: Through Hull depth finder-FXHO

My brand and model of Sounder/plotter was a Garmin 178c Plotter/Sounder with chart cartography installed via a card slot. I've placed a pic below from one of my "explore days" on the 05 FX.

The test panel I made worked very well in the rubbish bin of water ... I rang Garmin Aust. and thats how they test transducers ... in a large plastic bin of fresh water.

The trans also worked well in the FX its a dual frequency model 50-200Hz. Maybe that has something to do with it keeping bottom at speed ??? Geez ..I could even see fish on the thing ...

I dont know why the silicone didnt work for you ?????

My transducer was parallel with the FX hull not pointing straight down. I thought if I did this the silicone would be thick on one side and thin on the other and might not be as efficient ???

The transducer sees the bottom via a cone shaped beam so I reasoned the 20 degree FX hull would throw it sideways a bit in deep water sure ...but in shallow water (where I need it) the 20 deg angle to the sea bottom was still accurate enough for me to get a shallow water alarm. The bottom alarm is a great feature ...I had it set at 3 ft !!

The silicone sealant I used was ... Selleys Wet Area Silicone Sealer, Non- Corrosive in White ...in the FX. The test panel was Selleys Neutral cure silicone in clear ...

EDIT: BB ... I feel for ya .... Its a pain workin' in that area of the hull ... if it doesnt work now it might be the trans type or frequency ????

    Thanks!
My test run on the slow cure epoxy will be this weekend. I will let you know.
I will need a skin transplant on my knuckles from all the well work.

Has anyone done an "in dash" install? I looked on my 04 FX HO and the standard 2 1/8" display I have seen will not fit nicely.
Has anyone found a smaller display that would look somewhat factory?
Any pics would be great as well. Thanks for the help.

    Success!
Slow cure epoxy and placement of the transponder in the pumpwell works.
As for the display Wisjetskier, I could not find any place either. I made a bracket out of aluminum and double sided taped it to the tilt lever. it holds the display steady and out of the way. This until I fid a better, more permanant place.

Note, The readings will occasionally freak out at 45+mph and I think it is searching due to the slight angle of the pump well.

    Neptugian,

Cool ! You can now chase fish up to 45mph !!! (wink)

Check this area I explored with the sounder onboard ...

It was spooky idling through here ... went for a few miles ...
