removed head and found signs of about 10 spots on top of the pistons that show where water was leaking in. could not see this thru the plug hole. about 6 bolts broke off as i was removing them. need to replace some parts. This is the problem with working on salt water engines.20220711_103405.jpg

That water probably fell in when you took off the head. Neither one of those piston tops show they were burning any water.

Nope, that is referred to as the 'wash" pattern, or 'piston wash'. Fingernail sized pattern on the piston top right at the locations of the intake ports are just right. A little larger for a modified engine. That is where the raw fuel comes in and keeps the carbon 'washed' off the piston top. Water intrusion will basically steam clean the combustion chamber in the head AND the piston top.

    On smooth or choppy water?

Is it running at 4K, then catches a little air in the pump, and
gets 6k for another short period?

Why do you have a 65gr spring, and do the carbs pop clean
at 28psi and hold near 24psi, or does pop at 28 and leak down
to something between 10 to 20psi?

Those carbs have a tendency to run rich, and are sensitive to
    spring changes.

It is a good habit to test pop-off while disassembled, and after
each carb has been completely assembled. Pop-off should be the
    same.

Were the needle and seats new, or used and you replaced the
    o-ring on each seat?

I recommend you find an EDM broken bolt or tap removal service.

I have not ever tried an edm shop before, but those broken head
bolts will be difficult to remove. Hopefully the cylinder bolts do not
    break too.

if you had water intrusion the tops of the pistons and combustion chambers would be spotlessly clean, almost like they had been pressure washed, the steam created by water in the combustion chambe steam clean everything.
