Can't make this sh1t up. My librarian analogy is so sadly accurate.
The level of helplessness I see each day is beyond astounding.

    Re: Forums versus Facebook

    reminds me it the tech support story that has been around for a while;

Customer Support: "Ridge Hall computer assistant; may I help you?"

Caller: "Yes, well, I'm having trouble with WordPerfect."

    CS: "What sort of trouble?"

C: "Well, I was just typing along, and all of a sudden the words went away."

    CS: "Went away?"

    C: "They disappeared."

CS: "Hmm. So what does your screen look like now?"

    C: "Nothing."

    CS: "Nothing?"

C: "It's blank; it won't accept anything when I type."

CS: "Are you still in WordPerfect, or did you get out?"

    C: "How do I tell?"

CS: "Can you see the C: prompt on the screen?"

    C: "What's a sea-prompt?"

CS: "Never mind. Can you move the cursor around on the screen?"

C: "There isn't any cursor, I told you, it won't accept anything I type."

CS: "Does your monitor have a power indicator?"

    C: "What's a monitor?"

CS: "It's the thing with the screen on it that looks like a TV. Does it have a little light that tells you when it's on?"

    C: "I don't know."

CS: "Well, then look on the back of the monitor and find where the power cord goes into it. Can you see that?"

    C: "Yes, I think so."

CS: "Great. Follow the cord to the plug, and tell me if it's plugged into the wall."

    C: ".......Yes, it is."

CS: "When you were behind the monitor, did you notice that there were two cables plugged into the back of it, not just one?"

    C: "No."

CS: "Well, there are. I need you to look back there again and find the other cable."

    C: ".......Okay, here it is."

CS: "Follow it for me, and tell me if it's plugged securely into the back of your computer."

    "I can't reach."

CS: "Uh huh. Well, can you see if it is?"

    C: "No."

CS: "Even if you maybe put your knee on something and lean way over?"

    C: "Oh, it's not because I don't have the right angle - it's because it's dark."

    CS: "Dark?"

C: "Yes - the office light is off, and the only light I have is coming in from the window."

CS: "Well, turn on the office light then."

    C: "I can't."

    CS: "No? Why not?"

    C: "Because there's a power outage."

CS: "A power... A power outage? Ah, Okay, we've got it licked now. Do you still have the boxes and manuals and packing stuff your computer came in?"

C: "Well, yes, I keep them in the closet."

CS: "Good. Go get them, and unplug your system and pack it up just like it was when you got it. Then take it back to the store you bought it from."

C: "Really? Is it that bad?"

CS: "Yes, I'm afraid it is."

C: "Well, all right then, I suppose. What do I tell them?"

CS: "Tell them you're too stupid to own a computer."

    Re: Forums versus Facebook

I can totally relate, I pick up two RXPs from a customer last year, he want's them winterized and stored and oh by the way both ot them are running really bad, they have a skip to them and won't run over 40MPH. So I try to start them up and only one lanyard actually fits the ski. He sends me all the lanyards in the mail. I winterize up the skis, a couple of weeks ago I summerize them and haul them to the water to test out, skis run perfect. I call him up and ask again exactly what the skis are doing, I get the same answer, I then ask him if there is any chance they were running the skis with the learning keys instead of the standard lanyard, I get a long pause. Yep here's your sign folks.

I actually miss the days when "let me google that for you" was a thing.
The public and shameless displays of absolute helplessness today are so epic that even saying "let me google that for you" would not be understood by the recipients.....as they would need someone to google "let me google that for you" FOR them, and then show and explain to them what it means, and it still wouldn't be a concept that many could grasp.

    Re: Forums versus Facebook

Just to clarify, I get that the utter and complete helplessness that many have shamelessly mastered these days exists in more place than just fukbook, lol. It's just that it is prominently on display, in great supply, all over fukbook, and fukbook seems to be an awfully popular place for the terminally helpless to beg for help from random strangers about every "need" that pops into their little heads.....so there's that. It would appear that fukbook, at least compared to forums such as pwctoday, is much more like general conversation, were people are less hesitant to censor themselves, or actually give much thought to what they are asking - at least as compared to here, where the questions and answers at least appear to be better thought out.

Now if you could create a browser extension to search the fbook pages like forums that would be nice. but mostly I point people to the forums when they ask questions.

I have been retired for 12 years, after teaching for 35. Some of us FOUGHT this all of my 35 years. Classes said they were reaching problem solving, but they still expected kids to all come up with the same answer.

My argument was, "How can that be problem solving if you already KNOW that answer."?

There were a lot of happy people when I walked out the door that last day. But the kids I had were not so happy.
