Heat thoroughly, press, allow to cool.

Hard to see in the picture, but there is a decent dip there now.

        Re: Project FX1 for 2022

Well, with just a bit of tank reshaping and the stock padding underneath, getting the FX1 tank to fit with the SJ mod chamber is doable, and you wind up with a nice amount of clearance between the tank and chamber. I looped some anti fatigue matting between the tank and chamber, just in case. Very easy to secure it to the stinger line hose with a zip tie...and easy to swap out if needed.

If anyone is looking for a brand new SJ fuel tank, I'm guessing this the one purchased for this build will be for sale.

Decided to take the minty reeds from the OEM intake and swap them on to this Wet Jet manifold, as the ones that came with the Wet Jet setup were less than perfect.

            Getting close.
Built the fuel system, with a new used fuel selector, on the bench and got it installed.
Still need to go through the fuel tank pickup assembly and get it plumbed. Then drop in the battery and she will go vroom vroom.

                    Fuel tank pickup redo

Another example of why you should always open sh1t up and look.
Whoever was inside this fuel tank last, yeah, well, they didn't care about the future. Notice the missing clamps galore.

                      Re: Project FX1 for 2022

As I've documented in other builds, the large height difference between the ON and RES pickups seems lame to me. If you ride aggressively, you wind up sucking air through the ON pickup at 1/2 tank, so you have to switch to RES and then try to run a clock in your head to decide when to head back to your gas can.

So, I like to set up the RES pickup at about 1/8th inch off the bottom of the tank, so you can actually use all the fuel, with v-cuts on the tube, so it can't suck flat to the bottom of the tank. Then I set the ON pickup at 1 to 1.5 inches above the RES pickup, so when you actually need to switch to RES, it actually means something real, lol...it means you have 5-10 minutes, so head back to your gas can.

                        Hood gasket in.
Motor and pump work is done.
It now goes back to the owner for whatever paint/wrap he is planning.
Then comes back to me for turf install, break-in, and testing/tuning.

                          Re: Project FX1 for 2022

I've gotten some questions sent to me, so I figured I would post some follow up pump comments here.

I see that "fx1 pump mod" info is all over the place. Not just literally, as in FB, forums, etc...but technically as well. So my opinions are just my opinions, but I do have at least some firsthand building and riding experience, for whatever that is worth, and some of it comes from direct comparison.

                          Here are my opinions:
Unless you're going to swap in (or build) a larger pump tunnel, then I wouldn't bother with anything but modifying the 122mm pump or swapping in a kawi 140mm. Yeah, you can make the 144mm Yami fit (I did it with the bonsai bob set up years ago) with the stock tunnel, but IMHO, the juice isn't worth the squeeze. The 122mm pump mods detailed in this thread have worked very well for me. Now, I can't tell you which ones give you the most, as I've only done all at the same time, as a "package" of sorts, but what I do with the 122mm is:
                          1) Blueprint the pump. This will take you some time, depending on your skills and tool availability, but you can do a decent job even with a dremel and some rasping/cutting type bits. It also helps to have one of those narrow finger-shaped belt sanders. The point is there is a good chunk of material you can take out and then make smooth, in the pump stator, which is only going to help that small pump process more water, and process it more efficiently.
                          2) Stick a steep prop in there. Skat or solas. I've used both. Never tested them side by side, but both get the job done.
                          3) Add an aggressive intake grate...one that extends down below the hull a bit. I used the R&D Pro Series and liked it a lot. Looks like the JD in this build should dig nicely as well. I'm not a fan of the pro-tec. I've ridden a few FX1s with it...just not aggressive enough, and the same goes for the pro-tec intakes I've tried in SJs. I suppose if you're stuck with a pro-tec you could try shimming it downward, and I'd suggest at least 5mm, but probably more. Experiment and have fun during the process.
                          4) Add a longer ride plate. Riva worked well for me, but I didn't experiment much with FX1 plates.
                          5) Definitely add the OP steering nozzle. I actually did do testing years ago, as I swapped between the OP and stock. Yeah, you have to modify the OP (it's the SJ/B1 version) steering nozzle to make it fit the FX1, but it is incredibly worth it. Best I can say is takes the steering that tends to be vague and just tightens it up significantly...makes steering much more precise. Also the nozzle being extended helps to keeps the nose down when you want it down, which keeps that intake grate digging and stuffing the pump.

I hope this helps others trying to decide which way to go with their FX1. You could literally do everything I'm talking about here to your 122mm in a weekend, after you've gathered all the parts.

This FX1 never made it back to me last year for turf install, break in, and tuning. I never heard back from the owner again until yesterday. Looks like I will have it for all the final stuff this spring...if spring ever gets here.
