    VXR Pro wiring help

I picked up a '95 VXR Pro with some electrical issues. As it sits right now, it wont start but I can get it to turn over by jumping the starter relay. Out of the ebox, running through the wire loom are a pair of black & white and a pair of red & brown pair of wires. These wire pairs have a corresponding connector that runs the wires up to the handlebars. I know if I disconnect the black/white I can bypass the kill switch. I've done this and it still won't start. There are also 5 other wires - black, green, brown, red and maybe a pink or red wire. These plug directly into some kind of relay. I checked a few parts diagrams and this doesn't appear to be a factory setup. The parts diagrams show that these wires are supposed to have a connector. The problem is I can't find where I'd plug this in? My guess is somebody cut the connector and added the relay, but for what I don't know? I'm thinking that this is what is causing my no start condition. Any ideas what I can do?

You better open the ebox and see what those are tied into.

    That relay is terrifying

I'm guessing the MFD died and that relay was some kind of who knows what...instead of just leaving the MFD unplugged????

No MFD on this one. I disconnected the oddball relay and kept the black/white kill disconnected. The battery is known good. All I get is starter relay clicks. Is it possible I have a bad ground if I can jump it this way?

This motor will eventually be swapped into my Boston Whaler Rage (which is basically all Waverunner III from what I've read) I know the ebox in that in the Rage is fine. Should I be able to use or test the 650 ebox from the rage with 701?

It didn't have the MFD with tach and fuel/oil levels?

    Bad ground is possible.

If you put 12v straight to the pos starter cable, does it turn over?

I have a 92 whaler Rage. I created/run the FB group for the yami Rages. Your entire Rage ebox is perfectly compatible with this motor.

    Re: VXR Pro wiring help

Looking at the model listing on the OEM parts finder, I don't see a pro model VXR for 95, and the standard 95 VXR has no MFD, but the 94 pro does. I've parted out 80-90 VXRs but never bothered to memorize this crap, lol.

It was listed as a '95 when I bought it...oh well. I cleaned up the ground and other wiring connections. It does turn over when I jump the starter relay. Bad CDI?

Post a pic of this ski.
Check ohms on the starter switch (disconnected) red to brown. Should be open and then make continuity when the button is pressed WITH the lanyard in.
Check ohms of the lanyard and kill switches black and white. Lanyard I believe is a made switch then opens up when the lanyard is inserted. Then the circuit makes again if you push the stop button.

    Re: VXR Pro wiring help

The last 2 digits on the HIN tag will tell you what model year it is.

Probably 10% of the 90s skis I buy are listed as the wrong year. Sellers don't know what they are selling.

    You need to check voltages.
Are you getting 12v SIGNAL voltage to the coil on the starter relay?
CDI can kill spark but won't stop it from turning over.
If you are getting 12v to the coil on the relay, but the relay doesn't close, you have a bad relay. If you aren't getting 12v to the coil on the relay, you have to figure out where the voltage is lost. I keep a brand new spare start/stop switch just for testing. It allows me to troubleshoot a bad start/stop switch in a minute.

Last two digits of the VIN are "95".

I get 12v to the relay, when I position the multimeter to the other post on the relay and press the start switch, the reading stays at 0 volts. I tested with another relay, but that one didn't even click. When testing, I'm keeping the white/black pair of wires disconnected. I only have 1/2 the handlbar switch and can't get connect the lanyard. I should have a new relay on Wed to test.
