Re: Just another silly Squarenose re-do

I actually didn't plan to start on this SN until well into winter. I've got 3 other projects that are supposed to be ahead of it, but the skis are not here yet. I was going to ride yesterday, but then the sun never came out, and I started spinning wrenches counterclockwise - and they just kept spinning so easily that I was motivated to keep going. Now I might as well keep going on this one while I'm at it. Other issue is I broke my left wrist in July, and never rested it nor got it casted as I should have to let it heal, but I have held off on almost all wrenching, until yesterday.....kinda missed spinning wrenches.

Re: Just another silly Squarenose re-do

Got the pump bearings and seals replaced last night.
I should have kept a bucket nearby to catch the water that came out of the pump - it was enough to make a splash noise when it hit the concrete shop floor. Judging by the black RTV evidence, the same person who bolted the pump sections together used the same crap under the nose cone. And the bearings that felt like gravel when installed, as is typical, felt rather smooth when removed - just before getting tossed in my scrap metal bin LOL. Driveshaft seal on that pump was as worn and sloppy as any I have seen. Anyhow, all new stuff in that pump now, and smooth and correct...and "broken in", as I use my drill and spline tool to sprin the pump for a while to make sure it's good to go.

I also grabbed a good spare B1/WR3 stainless OEM impeller from my stash to use. That 14/20 skat was measuring 20-22 thou anyhow...this OEM prop will be closer to bottom of the tolerance spec.

Pump is all nice & fresh with new bearings & seals, nice stainless blaster impeller with 16 thou clearance, everything aligned correctly, splines greased, DG Quadrafin ride plate, Westcoast intake grate, and silicone sealant behind the midshaft...should be all good for another decade or so

Time to open the ebox and see what's up in there.
Of course you knew at least one ebox screw would be missing....or course I have spares.

And this is why you always open up the ebox and check.

Not terribly crusty inside, but keep in mind the stator was replaced a few months ago, so the box didn't get cleaned at that time.

One of the grounds was just, ignored???

Ground wire clocking under one screw had them in a less than ideal position.

And most importantly, this SN came to me as a ported 701 with a b-pipe, yet it still has a 650 6r7 CDIs...not at all the right way to go. I have some spare 62t CDIs, and maybe some 61x ones as well, so it will at least now get a CDI with some extra rev limit.

Of course we all knew the stock handlebars would be bent, right?

Re: Just another silly Squarenose re-do

And here we have yet another example showing why handlepole bushings, top and bottom, need to be epoxied into place, so they can't move. Even with an aluminum handlepole, bushings allowed to move freely will dig into the pole.

The replacement bushings will be epoxied in place.
Yeah, I know a bearing steering system fixes this issue as well, and improves steering as well, but the point is that simple assembly tricks can still make the OEM parts work so much better and last longer.

When you want to use an M10 throttle on your Yamaha, but you don't have a throttle cable adapter, but you do have lots of M10 bolts, a vise, a bench grinder, drill bits, a tap & die set, and a dremel
