    Crankshaft Rust Question

    Hey guys,

I was changing the crank seals on a used 750 small pin I'm swapping into my X2 and noticed rust on one side of the crank. Reeds are also looking pretty bad. Hit it with a wire brush and some steel wool, any downsides to running if the bearings didn't have any rust or is this pretty common?

No downside in my view. Bearings are what matter.

That's a lot of rust. I promise, the bearings would have rust as well, are pitted and bad.

I would NOT run that crank.

    Re: Crankshaft Rust Question

It cleaned up pretty good actually. Left side was impacted more than the right. Think some water/humidity got in while it sat for God knows how long before I bought it which is why it had so much surface rust while the bearings look good. Thank y'all for the input!

    Re: Crankshaft Rust Question

I was hesitant to be negative, but I have to say that this will most likely end in one of those “hole in the engine case” scenarios, unfortunately.

    Re: Crankshaft Rust Question

id look into getting it rebuilt or replaced instead of trying to do it yourself. i had to replace mine and it wasnt near as bad as yours. i did find a super clean low hour oem crank for under 200 bucks the same week.
