650sx runs great in calm water boggy in choppy conditions

Any thoughts on why this happens.I thought maybe the pump isnt loading in rough conditions, maybe wrong impeller pitch.I was reading about pop off on the carb.
I have a brand sbn44 with the port match intake ,aftermarket pipe,Mariner head which Im pulling about 170 comp on it .
It purs like a kitten in the driveway under no load and when washing out but very touchy when in the surf and chop.

I think there may be an air leak From the base gasket.the compression was 160 left and 170 right cylinder.one of the spark plugs was dry after running it for a few minutes trying to dial it in

The jets were the only thing I touched on the carb.I bought it brand new sbn44.the jetting was a little low 110/130 stock I believe it was.I didnt measure pop off.I was going to check the advance just to make sure that wasnt out of wack.Didnt want to mess with it to much I just dropped $200 plus on that and the bracket.wound up changing the throttle drum as well cause it didnt line up properly

Black or silver carb? From the original jets sounds like black.

Yes black.the silver model I think is just the regular sbn.Black was the high performance model that needs the primer but I could be wrong.Only did some minor research on it.Thought they were bolt on and go as opposed to Keihen with the external fuel pump.Wanted to eliminate all that

I have the correct specs for that. I am sure your pop off is wrong. The silver carb is actually closer to your jetting needs but still not spot on. When I get to my computer around noon I will post the correct specs.

Re: 650sx runs great in calm water boggy in choppy conditions

OK, so here are the different specs for the two carbs. Otherwise they are the same carb.

    Black SBN44 2.3NS, 65G, 100P, 125M
    Silver SBN44 2.5NS, 80G, 120P, 140M

You need to change the jetting in the black carb to match the silver carb for your 650/pipe application. The only thing I would change beyond that is to a 150M
