    750sx Barn Find

Saturday while on the lake I was visiting one of my neighbors and long time friend. He advised me that one of our mutual friends had an unknown make, model, year stand-up sitting in a barn. Yes, yes I did send him a message that night asking when he could meet up. Sight unseen I hitched up my trailer and headed back down to the lake. I found a '92 Kawasaki 750sx sitting on the red Alabama clay / dirt floor of a tin barn. After a short conversation of catching up I was on my way to storage. I can't find any registration on the hull, maybe it was under the red hood... I did very little with it but its at least a few steps closer to living again.

Nice Jet Dynamics ride plate. What are your plans with this.... build it - or - part it?
Never argue with an idiot, they will drag you down to their level then beat you with experience.

Hey BL, planning on building it. For a price of $0 investment so far I think I'm already ahead. The end goal is a RN SuperJet. So I can build this, play with it and have a good return on investment when I do sell. I have an engine on the way now. Hope you are well!

    Re: 750sx Barn Find

The end of August is upon us. The temps have shown indications that cool weather is coming. Here in Alabama 90s are still sticking around but there was a week of 80s with nice cool mornings. What has been getting my attention lately? Some of you are familiar with my other build threads. The answer is simply nothing has been getting my attention. School (college) has returned session, and that has been where the majority of my time has been spent. I have also invested in a 3-D printer which takes a varying amount of tinkering model depending.

So what has been done you might be asking? You last saw the 750sx in a very dirty state of being. It has since been cleaned up with a washing and internal hull cleaning. Additionally, I have taken note of the parts and hardware that I have. I picked up a full engine package from New Mexico, it was a little pricey but it should prevent me from having to parts hunt (I'll pay more for less hassle). Other than those notes everything is the same. More parts will be sourced and I aim to get this thing into my legal ownership since it seems subject to abandonment.

I opened up the engine box a little more to reveal some goodies. Here's what I found. I have no ebox, I will have to find a clean way to mount it all.

    Re: 750sx Barn Find

In the past month, little work has taken place. I ordered a reduction and steering nozzle to complete the pump. At this time, I need to sandblast a few parts so that I can throw them in. One being the bedplate... I think. And a few other items need to be figured out such as sourcing a start-stop switch. This is a weird one because its running 650 electrics, and I honestly don't know anything about them. After that, a throttle lever will be required. Then it can go together. Exciting stuff here. Pictures to come soon, the SJ build is distracting, both need love.

    Re: 750sx Barn Find

Alright, what has happened? Personal life takes up a lot of time when you are in the late college phase. With that going on the ski sat in a few different places. It moved from the storage unit to the lake, then back a few times. One of my close friends reached out saying: "Pick a day for us to finish this thing." With that in mind, we gathered the spare parts, nuts, and bolts and met up. In a few short hours, everything was complete. The pump went in with a 5 - blade impellor, the water box was mounted, the engine bolted down, and the pole bracket was blasted and powder coated purple. This left electrics to be mounted and wired. They were a literal bird's nest so I came back and got his help again. This took place over the course of 2 weeks.

In the meantime, between working with him I took it to the lake place and mounted the pole to the bracket and the bracket to the ski. If you have ever worked on a 750sx pole you know it sucks. The pole must be mounted to the bracket first because the bolt is not accessible once the bracket and pole are mounted to the hull. It is a nice aesthetic when complete but it is a pain to do. I ended up hanging the pole from the rafters with ratchet straps and lowered it into place. Not fun.

With the pole mounted and the switches on I was able to run the wires and cables. Fairly easy with some patience. From here is when I took it back to my friend for his assistance in the wiring.
It ran then and I used a zip tie to tidy the wires and dropped it in the water.

It had some apparent issues, a loose hose clamp or two, and a leak from the firewall. Behind the pad on the firewall (where the fuel selector is) there was a hole so as I would climb into the tray or idle slowly the hull would fill with water. I suspect silicone will be a nice temporary fix.

It ran great, I had no history on this dual carb small pin motor. She sat for a year without fuel. It was a relief to see it fire off and run happily. It has two throttle positions where it will sputter and die.

Right below cruise, it tends to give out unless you feather the throttle a little. Either hot or cold starts (not enough data) it gets finicky.

Other than that I am impressed with my budget build. I estimate my investment is just under 1k.

Good job! I suppose some fresh carb kits will straighten out the running issue.
