    Re: First JS440 build!

    Can't edit any longer.

I think I figured it out.
The JS440 gasket kit I had has gaskets for both sides of the carb, and they do fit my carb correctly. Thus the manifold is the problem.

Gonna order one off eBay and hope for the best. Thankfully I have the manifold space because I am certain I will need it to clear the engine.

    EDIT

Ordered a manifold with the spacer. Also ordered a funky flame arrestor.

    Re: First JS440 build!

There are way more knowledgeable people here than me, so I don't know why they aren't posting. So, I will give it a shot and hopefully they will correct me if I am wrong.

That is a Mikuni carb you have. (I love Mikuni carbs. The Mikuni SBN44 on our Super Jets and which was added to our X2 650cc are great carbs.)

But I just checked my wife's JS440 and it has a Keihen carb. I haven't taken apart a Keihen carb and I have heard that they are complicated.

So, my best guess is that you should be happy that you have a Mikuni, but you will have to buy a different manifold (which you have already determined) to make it fit on the JS440.

Not really a "snag" but an upgrade opportunity.

So, carry on. It looks like you are on the right track. And since I will be rebuilding my wife's JS440, we really appreciate all your photos.

And FYI, my wife's JS440 has the 1980's version of the same flame arrestor you just bought.

Thanks E350! I have a 38 mm manifold on the way so hopefully I should be alright.

I will likely have to fabricate a throttle bracket as I'm missing that as well. But that is easy enough since I have material in the garage already.

    Re: First JS440 build!

So after lots of cleaning, drying, brake cleaning, vacuuming, etc. I finally got the engine bay clean enough to start spraying.

Just some Rustoleum paint and primer in “Thundercloud” gray. I’ve always liked the machine gray look.

    Re: First JS440 build!

Just been working on boring sanding and more sanding. I finally removed all the original safety stickers. About to turn the hull over and glass some small cracks in the bottom.

I am about to close on my first house and boating every weekend with the family so that has been taking all my time.

Congratulations on your first house!!! It will make you poor in the first few years but rich in the long run!

Is that a jet pump, I/O or straight shaft boat?
