    Yamaha WB1 - Starting Issue

    Hi all
I have just rebuild my WB1 top end and it will not run correctly, can anyone please help?
When I prime the carb the engine will fire, rev uncontrollably high then cut out, all in about 3 seconds. I can prime the carb again and the same thing happens.
I thought this might be a rely issue, so I have replaced with a new Yamaha rely but with no success and I have cleaned the carb. I am running a Factory B pipe, water box and ADa head, with 170psi.
    I am stuck!!!!
    Thanks
    Bob

Sounds like it is sucking air to me. Intake gasket leak maybe.

Thanks, do you mean around the Factory B Pipe exhaust manifold?

By your description (High uncontrollable idle / runaway) it sounds as you are lean. A lean fuel condition will cause this.

Did you determine what previously caused your engine failure?

Did you do a leak down test after engine assembly?

You may have an air leak, bad/dirty carbs, fuel delivery issue (IE tank pick ups, fuel select etc)

You are running lean and will damage your new top end, if you have not already.

Thanks John, there was no engine failure, I did not complete a leak down test, the carb is all good and checked, and the tank fuel lines are clean. I will see if its running lean

Are you priming it with an actual primer or just dumping premix down the carbs? A faulty primer, or one plumbed in the wrong line can cause an air leak....ask me how I know...$450 later....
Changes aren't permanent, but change is.

Also make sure your throttle cable is adjusted correctly, and your throttle plate(s) is closed when at idle position.

After you prime the engine, it only runs for a few seconds,
then the engine quits running? I think it is important that
the engine only runs on a prime because that indicates that
    the float chamber is dry.

    1++

A vacuum leak on the carb base gasket, possibly combined with
a vacuum leak on the intake manifold gaskets could account for
    much of your problems.

Did the engine run this way before the top end overhaul ??

Did you rebuild the carbs? or reuse any gaskets.

Re: Yamaha WB1 - Starting Issue

Hey guys my starting issue on my 93 760 yamaha waveblaster is, I push start it turns over and continuously turns over even with finger off the button. The ski runs but when u shut it off it continues to try and crank the engine until the negative batt cable is pulled off.

Im guessing the problem area is the switch, from what i have read these switches are pretty terrible.

I pulled the engine out replaced the starter and solenoid along with the fuse just recently, last owner had it in salt waters and every single bolt is correded and stuck if that puts your mind at a better state of the skis perspective of problem areas.

This situation is typically a bad start relay. You say you replaced your relay, but did you use a genuine Yamaha one or cheap aftermarket? If you used ANY aftermarket relay I am sure this is your issue.

Could be a bad/stuck switch (not common) or shorted / pinched wires (This I have seen).

You need to bust out the multi meter and do some testing. You should be able to determine exactly what is wrong.
