    93 gtx gremlin

    Hi guys,
    I have a 93 gtx which I fitted a 717 into about 6yrs ago.
All was well til someone connected battery in reverse & popped the cdi.
I just recently purchased an after market cdi (dont judge, only getting running again to sell) and now it will start but the moment you release the start button it beeps temp warning & stalls.
I disconnected the temp sensor- no different.
Put lanyard on & shorted across the start solinoid- no different.
Without forking out the big dollars for genuine cdi, can you guys think of a possible wiring issue or something silly may have missed?
    Cheers

Does it still do this with the temp sensor unhooked?

Put lanyard on and short across the starter solenoid with the start switch unhooked.

It sure sounds like an internal short in the mpem. Double check that the stator and voltage regulator are not shorted to ground.

    Earth/ground - good
    Black/red - 56ohm
Yellow - no continuity to ground
Yellow/black - no continuity to ground

Another mpem is being sent as a replacement, was hoping for a shortcut to get me on the water....oh well, I'll have to wait.
Thank you for the help so far.

    Re: 93 gtx gremlin

Update, i was given a 92 sp with engine in pieces (580cc). I've taken the mpem and fitted it into the gtx (originally 657 but now 717), it is running but only half throttle as though it cannot keep enough fuel up to it (I'm assuming it's going to be something like advance curve difference). Will let you know when correct mpem arrives.
    P.S. it's 95 not 93 gtx.
    Cheers

    Update,
Replacement new mpem arrived, fitted & tested. Exactly the same issue. Unit powers as soon as battery is connected (small chirp from buzzer & an audible click from start solinoid).
Safety lanyard on & fire straight up, then temp alarm & shutdown within 2 seconds.
There was 1 test that lasted 4-5 seconds before temp alarm.
Thinking of stripping down one of the mpems to see if I can find a simple error.

    Re: 93 gtx gremlin

This one does the same with temp sensor unhooked? I had an Arieltek mpem on a 717 that did that goofy beep and solenoid bump every time it powered up too! But, it ran fine. The 580 mpem should work, I've done it. The rev limiter is a little lower but you'd never notice it in the GTX. Is it actually starving for fuel? Maybe theres crap in the carbs? Put the 580 mpem back in and run it. See if it's the same in "on" and "res". Also try slowly pulling the choke and see what it does. I have changed a few stators through the years that ohmed fine but would not produce enough voltage at higher rpm to feed the ignition. The 580 stator can also be used.
