Fuel Issue / Runs out of gas at half tank?

    Hi
I have a gp1200 with a new engine and just had carbs worked on. Ran perfect for the first 5 and a half gallons and then started to sputter like it was running out of gas. I ran it as long as i could to try to get back to the boat ramp before it had nothing left in it. I figured it was low on gas an as a simple as that. I have no fuel gauges and could not see through the tank. I took her to the gas station and to my surprise 5 and half gallons filled her up. She crunk right up and ran perfectly. I'm going to run for longer next weekend and see if the problem repeats at the same mark. Was wondering if someone could give me an ordered list as to what the likely culprit might be? Thanks!!!

If it happens again, you might try opening the gas tank's filler cap
for 30 seconds, and see if it runs.

Just out of curiosity, what happened to the engine before the overhaul,
and why did the carbs need to be rebuilt?

Thank you for the response! To answer your questions i want to first state that i know next to nothing about working on these things unfortunately. I bought it with a blown engine and had a new engine put into it. The guy that put in the engine said the carbs had metal shards in it and needed to be cleaned / rebuilt (not sure which is the proper terminology). I will definitely try your suggestion!

Another thing you can try is to put the fuel selector to "reserve." This will use a different fuel feed "tube" going down the tank. The reserve tube will be closer to the bottom of the tank.

From your description, it sounds like there could be something wrong with your "run" fuel feed tube. Perhaps it has a hole in it at the 5 1/2 gallon fuel burn point. Think about a soda straw with a hole in it in the middle. If the hole is down under the top surface of the soda, you can continue to suck up soda. As soon as that hole is above the surface of the soda, you're now sucking air through that hole in the straw.

You tried switching to reserve when you thought it was running out of gas?

Did the engine ever stall at WOT? or stall more than once.

If an engine fails, and the owner just rebuilds the engine, there is a good
possibility that the second engine will also fail. So I was hoping the carb
overhaul was for a better reason. Never the less, when I was a tech, I
always included a carb overhaul with any engine rebuild.

Do you have any receipts with a list of parts that were replaced, or the old
    engines piston that failed.
