    55mph Top Speed

    Hi all,

Sorry but I just have to ask. I have a 2017 Yamaha VXR. Since the day I bought it, the top speed is only ever 55-57MPH. I have a candoo pro GPS speedometer and I keep it well maintained. This has been since day 1, it now has about 100 hours on it. I operate in the state of New Jersey.

Is there some sort of governor that would limit the speed to 55? I see that it is supposed to go 65, but I have never even hit 60. This is with a full tank of gas, empty, 1 person, or 3 people..never more than 55. I am an average height and weight person.

    Any ideas?

Can't wait to get back on the water...happy new year everyone

    Thanks.

It is supposed to go 65? Is that in some Yamaha manual?

    Re: 55mph Top Speed

Boattest.com said top speed is 66.5 and one can find videos of people showing their 2017 and 2018 VXR's doing 65 on youtube.

I'm wondering more if the state of NJ has governed speed somehow OR if my ski is just slightly slow? Again, it doesn't matter how much weight (gas, people, etc) I have on the ski - it never goes over 55-57 TOPS. That just doesn't seem right to me. Thougth maybe someone had a tidbit of info that would answer that.

Anyone have an unmodified 2017 VXR that goes faster than 57?

Are you reading speed from the speedo on your ski? It is possible your pitot tube is plugged up, the inlet opening could be partially blocked or damaged causing a false reading. Not sure how it is mounted on your ski, but it could be turned sideways a little.
2, 1998 TS 770 L, restored and running great. (Except for the one with engine that SBT put the WRONG crankshaft bearing into and is now sitting as I collect repair parts)

Maybe the Reverse Bucket is interfering with the jet flow? Check it for proper clearance.

Reports state that it should reach speeds in the mid 60's...

Position of trim can make a difference, also if you have a/m intake grate or rideplate.

    Thanks, all.

Position of trim has not made any difference in speed. It feels "governed" quite honestly and i read elsewhere of another person, exact same ski, exact same issue. No resolution either. Who knows. It just seems slow for a "racing ski", which is how it was marketed.
