    GTX won't rev ??

    Howdy!

Looking at buying a 97 ? (green plastics and seat) GTX w 787 engine.

Owner says it hasnt been run in a while. (last reg sticker dated 2017)

We took it to the lake to test ride, and it was a bear to get started at the inspection station.

Plugs were black, and fuel soaked, so we put in 2 new ones.

Finally after 20 minites of cranking it started trying to fire up.

Got it running and into the water, but it wouldnt get over 3,000 rpm and about 10 mph.

It had a momentary burst to 5,000 rpm for a couple seconds, then back to 3,000.

Took it to the marina and put in some quicksilver carb cleaner and about a gallon of fresh gas. (all it would hold)

    Made no difference.

Any input as what this might be? Clogged carb? Maybe primary jet ok, but main jet clogged?

    Thanks in advance.

    Hi and Welcome!

The ski is most likely a 1996/1997 GTX 787 with the dark green plastics. You could look at the HIN(Hull Identification Number) at the back of the ski on a black rectangular plate and the last two numbers on the right side is the model year.

The problem(s) You describe sounds like the entire fuel system needs to overhauled and a compression test of both cylinders will also help. The RAVE valves can also be sticking from carbon build up over the years. Rebuilding the carbs with genuine Mikuni rebuild kits will also be needed along with the other systems/subsystems to keep the ski running correctly and not leave you standed.

Download the factory repair manual and read up on it as it provides a lot of info that you will need to know.

As Cliff stated above, I also recommend going though the fuel system completely. Sea Doo's are known for fuel related issues, and failure to address these will end in engine failure. Rebuild carbs, fuel pump, replace all fuel lines, and fuel select switch. The fuel filter is cleanable. Check the o-ring on the filter/water separator cup.

Hard to tell from your description, but you may have another issue.

Another common Sea Doo problem is the voltage regulator. When these fail, it will limit the engine to around 3000 RPM's. You can check this by just unplugging the regulator. It is a small aluminum square box with 2-yellow wires, and a red wire going into it. In a 96 it is mounted in the gray electrical box, and 97 I believe it mounted externally in the rear, or maybe up by the MPEM.

Again though even "IF" this makes the ski run well, go through and do some maintenance before running the ski much. Fuel system, change the jet pump oil, clean /service the RAVES, etc. As stated above a shop manual will give you all the info you will need.

Need to know year for sure.

    It is aprox 2" x 2" square.

If the ski has a grey electrical box, it is in the box. I am thinking the 97 had the electrics mounted externally with no grey box. ( I know the GSX did)

This voltage regulator is most likely the one in your GTX and it will fit in the palm of your hand when removed.
