    Doubling up on oil mix?

A guy I was speaking with has a 2000 XP. He bought it recently and was concerned about the oil injection. So he marked the oil tank to watch it's level drop during use indicating consumption. Additionally, he premixed at 40:1 in the fuel tank. Wouldn't this cause horrendous smoking? Possible over oiling and therefore engine damage? He claims its fine. I saw no smoke and it ran at 6900 rpm consistently.

I recently had an engine failure which had an unknown cause - the dealer suspected possible over-oiling which was a new concept to me as far as engine failure (I know it can cause plug fouling, smoking).

Either premix or oil injection not both over oiling is actually leaner .

So, over oiling could burn a piston due to lean condition?

No. The difference between 40:1 and 20:1 on a 170 jet is about 2.5 numbers.

on a brand new ski, seadoo says to premix in addition to oil injection during the break-in period. So id have to believe that it is safe to premix

Over oiling will cause excessive carbon build up, eventually cause ring seizure, and cause the plugs to foul, along with making it run poorer. Only time this should be done is during break in on a rebuild or new motor(first tank of gas).

Over oiling is typically leaner on some Kawi and Yama setups where the oil is injected at the carb - the viscosity causes lean conditions through the jets. Does not affect a lean condition in Seadoo setups due to direct injection on the intake but will make them run poorer and smoke.

Just to be sure, at what oil ratio or percentage does the oil cause engine damage?

Good question. I'd like to know as well. I've heard of guys using premix only at 40:1 ratio and another guy used 60:1. Not sure if there even is a manufacturer spec on premix since they expect us to not modify them and use the oil injection.

You'll be fine running injection and premix. Might smoke, may occasionally foul plugs. Yeah, it's kind of correct about the oil displacing the fuel and running lean, but I highly doubt you're running a high comp, on the edge race motor that would notice it.

Some people get a little bit of knowledge and become dangerous, or they're the new doomsayers.

As far as ratio, manufactures usually say 32:1. Certain oil makers say 100:1. My factory race bikes, I run 50:1 with H1R.

All my rec toys get 40:1, and I run it in everything, from injected blasters to 450 play bikes and a big a$$ DS650x 4 stroke.
