Plugs test good. Could it be the rotary valve not turning. There was smoke coming out the airbox when it was trying to start.

Pulled the throttle body off and found that the rotary valve is not turning. Something has hit the valve and dented one of the blades. I have pulled the motor to see what is going on.

The brass gear on the rotary valve shaft is sheared, this means pulling the shaft. probably replacing the shaft, brass gear and the seal, splitting the engine cases ,removing any trace of the brass gear from the steel gear on the crankshaft, installing new crankshaft seals and reassembly.

A small bolt or washer from the air intake assembly has been inadvertently dropped into the intake. That's what caused the dented rv. You need to pull the head also to see how much damage it's done to a piston, cylinder, and/or head.

Most of the time it never makes it that far, it gets caught in the intake port between the rotary valve and the port then it shears the gear, still not a bad idea though all it will cost you is a couple of o-rings.

And maybe a rebuild if it "shifts" the crank gear.

Did you miss the part where he said the rotary valve was not turning, this means one intake port is blocked off as both will never be open at the same time.
