Sxr 1500 sponson? Ride without? Home made?

    Hey,

I came from a '85 js 500 so this is a big change.
I've got about 12 hours on my sxr 1500. Very comfortable on it.
That said, on flat water, the ski likes to chine walk like crazy!
If I could fix that it would be so much more enjoyable to ride.

I've got 2 questions about sponsors.

    1. Has anyone ridden without sponsors? I'm wondering if it would slide out nice without them. You know, get a little freestyle?

    2. Has anyone made their own sponsors? I've got a couple pieces of aluminum 14x4 I was going to bolt onto the sponsons that came with the ski. After market sponsors at $400+ pair are not in my future.

    Any thoughts or suggestions welcome.

    Thanks

deep sponsons will drastically improve straight line stability and make the sxr1500 hook in turns. Mine has no chine walk squirrel zone movement at top speed anymore. Atleast the ones I made out of HDPE. Mine resemble the shape of the JCRacing sponsons. Except they are about 2" deeper and extend 1" past the rear of my hull. You can get a sheet for $45 on Amazon. It cuts easily with a jig saw. I cleaned up the edges with a sanding block. They look factory. Pull the OEM stock sponsons off, get stainless allen head bolts a 1/4" longer than the stock ones, shape and drill HDPE and reinstall the OEM sponsons over them, like a sandwich. Took me 1.5 hours from start to finish. If you want PM me I can give you the details. I might even have enough HDPE left over to make you a set. And the best part is it will save you $400

Looks good. I was going to put my home made ones on the outside of the stock sponsons. Now I'll try your way. I have the aluminum already I'll try that first. You didn't ride the SSR without sponsons did you? As long as I have the sponsons off I may try a ride sponson free.
    Thanks!

It took a few trys but this is what I ended up with. I may fine tune later.
I used 3/8 x 4 aluminum (could have used 1/8) way more stable. I just put more weight on left or right foot and it wants to go there.
It seems to want to porpoise a bit more. I would think a longer ride plate would fix that.
Pretty happy right now, will keep it this way for the rest of the season. Get used to it.

Can't understand why kawi didn't just do this simple fix for an obvious problem.

Hmmmm. You have the general idea. IMO you should go deeper and extend past the rear a little more. Shouldn't porpoise...your trading one issue for another. HDPE is super flexible and strong. Thinner material will lift your rear less = less proposing. You should be able to go wide open like it's on rails with no issues. I can make you a set. Just pay shipping and materials.
