Re: IJSBA Nationals Watkins Glen NY Aug 25-26

We have been in contact with our venue daily since hearing of Tuesday’s flash flooding, local optimism was high and we were proceeding as planned. Around lunchtime today we received a call from the director of the venue and we were told we would not be able to have our event there due to localized flooding, and current lake conditions.
The venue is grass which is now mostly covered in pooling water. Equipment from another event is already stuck in the areas we would have been using. Seneca Lake itself is under a Maritime Warning with a 5mph speed limit due to floating debris such as propane tanks, trees and worse. Recreational boating is discouraged. There is a possibility of more rain in the forecast and there is concern things could get worse. The canal and boat launch are already washed out or full of logs and debris. The area is seeking assistance from FEMA.
To further solidify the information, we have spoken with NYS Canal Corporation who regulates the waterway and confirmed the details, which would have prevented our regatta permit from moving forward.
In coordination with the Adirondack Coast Visitors Bureau, the City of Plattsburgh, the Clinton County Sheriff’s Department and other’s, we have secured the Plattsburgh City Beach (site of our last rounds) as a back up location for the same dates ( 8.25-8.26).
A lot of work was done very quickly to make this happen(3 hours) and more information will follow. We requested a change in the venue to allow camping. The request went up the chain of command, and was ultimately denied. Camping has never been permitted for any event at this location, and due to liability is was not able to be approved. The Adirondack Coast Visitors bureau did however verify there is availability at the Cumberland Head State Park which borders the venue for as low as $19/night. These two properties have an adjoining beach.
Adirondack Coast VCB is working with local hotels as we speak to make this happen, they already have a room block of 40 rooms at the La Quinta in Plattsburgh, NY and are reaching out to others. Please stay tuned as these details evolve........ - #regrann
