    951 help with crankshaft gear

I had a seizure of the CB shaft that happened instantly at 5,000 RPM roughly. After rebuilding everything and getting it back together she vibrates like crazy....CB shaft timing is off right. Turns out the new CB shaft is fine but the ring gear on the crank spun out of time.

    1. Can I just re-time the CB shaft to the crank lobes and not use the alignment marks?
    2. Since the gear on the crank spun, is it still ok to use or is a rebuild needed?

I doubt you would ever get things coordinated by estimation good enough to run for long. I would also check parts diagrams to see if the gears are force-fit alone or there is some kind of key or pin for correct alignment. You may have sheared one off, which would mean it will walk again.

Yes, it's do-able. That gear is press fit. I would think unlikely to spin again without some major force like those locked up bearings. Look at the weights, as the piston travels one way the counterweight goes the opposite. Match it up and run with it.

Thanks for the quick feedback gentlemen...I’ll give it a try...it’s surprising how good you get at pulling the 947 engine out of the Gtx the 2nd time around.

Well after manually setting the time between CB and Crank shafts, all is well. Ski is running great and all the vibration is gone. I would say the CB shaft was within a degree of alignment...not dead on perfect but very close.
