Top Side Paint or Gel Coat, What is safe to get away with???

I just purchased a 1991 Yamaha Waverunner III 650 that is mechanically sound, but has some minor issues. There was no EVA/padding on it, so purchased some Hydro Turf to lay down, but really worried that the minor chipping and discoloration will REALLY stand out like a sore thumb once I do if I don't try to fix it some before hand (see pic). Is there a safe compromise to applying auto white gloss lacquer in a few areas like this and getting by? Or will it be regret city?

Rust-Oleum "appliance epoxy" (which is just enamel) is cheap and good way to match the Kawasaki white Imron paint. Not sure if it will match Yamaha white well, but the "Appliance Epoxy" is easy and works well and is available at Home Depot or Lowes.

You could also turf over it. A little turf on the sides can help with banging your feet around too.

Awesome advise and good and cheap to give a quick shot. I really appreciate it Bob. I'll post some picks and show how it works out (unless it is a disaster, and probably based on "my skills").

Never gel coat a jet ski. Even if you get it to stick, after you spray it, it'll leave a massive orange peel you'll spend days sanding, and you'll never get it smooth in all the inside corners. I gel coated my 750 sxi, it held up and didn't fall off, except for one place with bad prep work, just fine. But the sanding was horrible. Specially because if you focus on one area you'll run through another area and screw it all up.

Got it, awesome advise as well. I'll just get some marine patch, try the epoxy, and if I get good enough, I'll let it go. Otherwise if it doesn't match, o still needs a bigger hit, I'll go the topside paint route. Looks like a few TotalBoat options on amazon.

Okay got the paint. FYI Lowes is running a sale on Rustoleum Appliance Epoxy Paint until 5/10. Only 2 bucks a can! Even more worth a shot at that number. I picked up 7 cans.
