I'd like to pick up a few and attempt to repair like I did mine. If it works out I though about offering a repair/exchange option. I've only got a couple hours on mine so far though and that's certainly not enough time to come to any solid conclusions..

Well I have 20+ hours on my manifold now and so far so good. I also picked up a 2nd one that I cut apart last night. If time permits I may try to do some welding on it today.

It has very similar damage to the 1st one I repaired the rot is just in slightly different locations. If you look at the 1st and 2nd pics you can see that corrosion forms along the bottom and just eats away at the aluminum. The last picture was after I sandblasted it and you can see it blew though in several locations.. I suspect that the rot will almost always occur along that bottom tube as the water probably drains from the rest of the manifold but sits down there..

I have a mint salt free one for sale if anyone needs one. Best one out there. Never in salt, under 100 hrs of use.

Re: Rotted out Exhaust manifolds F12/R12

I decided on this one to beef up the bottom of the inside tube where all of the corrosion seems to occur. Not only did this add more metal to the bottom of the tube but it also made it easy to find any questionable areas. When you hit a bad area with the TIG torch it pops and is real obvious as the impurities rise to the surface...

I added about 1/16" of material. It was a bit of a process as I had to the weld up the entire surface, grind it smooth, weld in any low spots, then grind it smooth again..

I cut out another cap and hopefully will have time to weld it on over the next few days...

It's all closed up now. Next step is to pressure check the water jacket but I'm pretty sure it will be fine..

Looks like you might have used a TIG before. Good job!

Thanks.. I'm no expert by any means. I have a friend that TIG welded full-time for a number of years. He has several welding certifications and is a year away from havings his bachelors in welding and fabrication engineering. He has been teaching me over the past year and I've improved considerably. When I compare my welds to his though I realize how far I still have to go...
