This might be one for the record books!

Has anyone ever seen anything like this! This is #1 piston and combustion chamber in my '96 900 ZXI. This piston is not stock part, different than the other two. The craziest part is, there is no sign of the missing material anywhere.

look or shake the exhaust pipe and water box. Look in the transfer/boost ports as well.

looks like roll pin pieces. Crankshaft rod ends . One of the ends is getting ready to handgrenade the whole motor. Either that or it already happened and someone replaced that piston and tope end bearing. I would think that the rod bearing surface would have been damaged

I thought about the exhaust system. The ports are all clean in the block but I haven't checked the exhaust system. I also wonder if maybe someone actually put it back together like that. I bought it not running 3 yrs. ago, didn't have to get in the engine to get it running.

Yeah I haven't looked at bearings yet. They all roll fine, don't have any roughness.

It went out the exhaust. That's what happens when the piston wears out and has too much clearance. You will most likely find cracks in the other pistons.

Speed is very expensive. How fast do you want to spend?

Inspect the crankcase real well. Usually, the chunks of piston get caught between the crank and case and crack it just before they go out the exhaust.

Thanks for all the replies. Yeah it must have broken up and all gone out the exhaust. There is no sign of any of the metal in the engine. Not sure how there is none in the rod bearings but everything is clean. I've done all my own mechanic work for over 40 years and this is a new one on me.
