    Waverunner III High RPM Issue

Hi all, I bought a 1993 WR III 650 used. It starts up super easy, idles super smooth, and planes out as it should. The problem I am having is at full throttle. If I sustain 2/3 throttle, it purrs along the water just fine. Once I pull a little more, it starts to vibrate and gets pretty noisy. It also seems to maintain the exact speed as 2/3 throttle.

I will also inform you that it has NO air filter at all. Obviously this is a bad thing, and I need to get one on there. But, does anyone think that maybe the previous owner adjusted the carb to run with no filter and therefore it has too leann of a mixture at full throttle? Let me know what you guys think!

Hard tell without actually seeing it run.....

But knowing what I know about Yamaha, I am guessing your rev limiter is kicking in early. Also known as limp mode.

This can happen from a few different problems. One is the CDI thinks you ski is over heating. Usually this is from a bad over heat sensor in the head. You can unplug this internally in the e-box to test.

2nd is your engine IS actually getting too warm, and the CDI is shutting down your RPMS to help save the engine.

3rd, we have found many with a bad CDI, that just seems to limit RPMS early for no reason.

hmmm I think limp mode keeps you around 5-10mph, right? I am easily getting it past that. I have never had a gps on it, but I would say it has done 28-30mph. It also doesn't sound like it is truly bouncing off a rev limiter. But maybe! Sounds more like it's just struggling to increase RPMs... I should have posted this later in the year when I could actually tune/test it!

Just above 2/3 throttle is when the high speed adjuster starts to deliver fuel. Check to see where it is set. Turn it all the way in and count how many turns (or fraction of a turn) it takes to close it. I'd normally expect a stock 650 wr3 to run best at 1 to 1.5 turns out. Sounds like you're probably not in that range.

Im gussing impeller or bad engine mount (motor mount). Grab the exhaust and carb try to shake see if the engine will move off the motor mount. Its pretty obvious if one or more are broken. Inspect impeller from underneath through the pump intake. Does the impeller look chewed up?

    These are just guesses.

pwc's dont use traditional type motorcycle filters, just have screens.

I've seen sweet gum gum balls and Styx caught in the impeller make the pump extremely vibrate when wide open. So inspect for any foreign debris like ski rope or Trotline fishing string

It could be so many things.

    What is your compression?

When you go beyond 2/3 throttle does the RPM's increase, without the speed increasing? If so, sounds like you have a pump / driveline issue.

Could be fuel / carb related.

Could also be dropping a cyl (spark wise).

Def Leppard was caught up in there too. Speak to text doesn't always work.

My Android seem to work much better than the new iPhone.
