    Small Victories!! JS550

Thrilled with my project today! I was given a 1988 JS550 that hadn't run since 1998. Finally was above freezing up here in New England -GO PATS!!, so got the opportunity to get in the garage and put a wrench on this thing. Got the motor out-coupler off, fly wheel off, stator off and both Minifolds. This is my first Jet ski build, and based on what I have learned here, all went well! Some bolts were a *****,and I did manage to break 1 exhaust manifold bolt, and the intake manifold stud. Good news is bothe have at least an inch left so I should be able to get them out.
tomorrow I Split the cases and remove the jugs- at that point I will decide if I go ahead with a rebuild or not, but so far, looks good👍
Thats about it, just really psyched I was able to do all of this from the info I got here!

When you buy seals get OEM Kawi parts, the gaskets can come from anyone but the crank seals are most critical.
Never argue with an idiot, they will drag you down to their level then beat you with experience.

    Thanks!
Good day again today whole motor apart! The wrist pins were a little harder than i remember getting out, but all out. Crank looks good, cylinder looks good, I am on to rebuild! Soaked everything I. Parts cleaner today, and ordered some engine paint and stuff.
BL- I bought a full gasket kit from SBT, should I not use those seals?
Also, what is the best way to "clean" the crank, I didn't want to put any parts cleaner on it with the rubber and stuff.
Having lots of fun doing this, funny thing is, I am building this thing back so my boys can ride it,I might not ever even get on it!

    So here is my update.
Got the motor all put back together- cleaned/painted. Re-did the crank seals. I gave a quick hone to the cylinder and put new rings on that I got for the cheap. Didn't want t vomit to new pistons, until I get it going again. All in I am still under $150 bucks. Going to rebuild the carb now and give it a try next weekend (in the garage, I am in mass!). So that's it, so far, thanks to all the info on this site!

Looks really great. What cleaner or prep did you use to help the paint adhere? And what paint. Thanks

Just used Autozone parts cleaner and soap and water... scrubbed all exterior with Brillo and scrub brush. Then just rustoleum Engine enamel from WM. We will see if it holds up.

IMG_0072.JPGSo today I bolted her back in... was very nervous that all this work would be for not. So with no gas tank- and the carb still off-awaiting rebuild, I wired it all up and hit the button......not only did it turn, the fogging oil and stuff I had in it to lube it up as I reasambled....she fired for a few seconds!

Congrats on the initial start and it looks great. I hope to have the same experience soon.
