    JS550 Newbee, won't start

Purchased an 87 JS550 that won't start. Has recent rebuild, compression 120 each cylinder, spark but not strong on plugs laid on top, rebuilt the carb. When plugs are out shoots gas mist out of rear cylinder but not front. Charged battery, cranks well but won't fire at all. It has Kerker exhaust pipe, OCJS exhaust manifold, Mariner water box. Suggestions??? Anyone in the Mesa, Phx area could help me figure it out? Iv'e ridden dirt bikes for 50 years, quads for 7, rebuilt numerous items but this one has me stumped. It should run but it doesn't. Thx, Ron.

Have you tried cutting the plug wires back about a 1/4"? The plug boots screw on and off. And they get corrosion built up time to time.

I would remove the stator cover and inspect. Rusty I bet. Stator may require replacement. Check the stator wires with an Ohm Meter.

    Exciter- Red-----Black - 270 ohms +/- 20%
    Pulser - Red-----Gray - 25 ohms +/- 20%
    Charge coil - Green----- Green - 3ohms +/- 20%
    Green-----Black - 1.5ohms +/- 20%

If those values are good then check flywheel, may be wobbling........Mag Crank bearing or woodruff key is bad.

Good battery/starter? Is it flooding out? Try holding throttle wide open?

    Re: JS550 Newbee, won't start

I would try removing the spark plug boot and testing the arc straight from the wires to the head. It should be nice and bright blue and should be able to gap at least 1/8 to 1/4 inch from the head.
I had an issue with the coil/igniter as well that caused weak/intermittent spark. Esp if you have been cranking without grounding the plugs it could have damaged the coil.
Final suggesting is to turn off the gas when youre testing until you have good spark to not fill the bottom end with fuel.
Anyone in South GA, lets ride.

Ckd stator with ohm meter, all within specs. Took boot off spark plug wire and good spark. Puy plug bk on wire, good spark. Poured gas down carb, no start.

    Re: JS550 Newbee, won't start

does it sputter like it's trying to start or is it a dead crank... if your compression is 120, and spark is good like you said it should be trying to run off the gas you are pouring down the carb
