    JS550 with Reed Valves

The 87 JS550 I bought a couple of months ago has a reed block added to the intake manifold.

Is there any point to having reeds in a piston port intake machine? Does the 550SX intake go to the case?

I'm not familiar with the 650. Does the intake still go right into the cylinders? And then, if I needed new reeds, I would buy 650 reeds?

You probably have the Goki Reed adapter on your cylinder. The reeds on a 550sx are on the cylinder while the 650/750/800 reeds all go in the crank case. The Reed add on that you have will make your ski easier to start and give it a boost in efficiency. The reed adapter uses 650 Reed cages and pedals.

    Re: JS550 with Reed Valves

My bad, guys. I was just wondering if there is any benefit to having reeds in front of the ports when the pistons close the ports during the cycle. I'll post pictures of the reeds and the adapter today when I get home.

There's another issue I was wondering about as well. The reeds the previous owner installed are different on each side of the manifold. The front has two flaps (one big flap on the top and on the bottom), and the back side has six separate flaps (three on each). The front cylinder ran hot at some point and there is pitting on the piston and the head, as well as damage to the wall of the cylinder near the top. Could this be an effect of running two different reeds with a single-carb setup? If the front cylinder was getting a different mix than the back, and they tried to tune out the problem? Again, I'll post some pictures later today if they help, but does that sound like something that could happen in theory?

These are the mismatched reeds I was talking about.

Here's the part the reed valves sit in. No markings or brand name or anything.

That was produced by Goki. They made many parts like starters, battery cables and those reed adapters.

    Re: JS550 with Reed Valves

I've seen on this forum that there were instructions that came with the adapter for changing the intake ports on the cylinder, and drilling the pistons. The cylinder block I had to replace had the extended ports, and the old (destroyed) pistons had the windows drilled, but my new cylinder does not, and I assume that the pistons I buy will not have the holes either. How important is it to make those modifications when running the Goki adapter?
