Re: Scored a sxr... Needs some engine advice, 750 engine the same?

So I've got it all together and fired it up and it's idling really high, it's not a runaway bit feels like its going to. I've backed of the idle screw completely. I've also done a leak down test and it holds 10psi for 10 mins. Seeing as the carb is from a 800 and I put a 750 small pin in there, is this just a tuning issue? When I apply the choke it kills it so I think I'm rich? I've turned the low speed screws in a bit. Which direction should I go if it is carbs? Tighter or looser?? Anything else I should check?
I know my way around skis pretty good, carb tuning, not so much
    Thanks

If you backed off the idle screw, the throttle cable is too tight. Something is holding the throttle open a little.

Speed is very expensive. How fast do you want to spend?

I'll check that, thanks Chester! Seeing as it's a 750 small pin with sxr 800 carbs with stock settings do you think I'll need to rejet? just minor adjustments? or leave them be? As you know it's a little too chilly to head to the lake to tune it here in BC.

    Thank you!

Too chilly for some. I was out riding last week to test ride a customer's Jet-Ski.
Do you live on the coast? Put where you are from in your location, Canada is big.

Check the throttle cable like Chester says. If that's not it, verify that the throttle plates are not worn on the sides at the throttle shaft or that the throttle shaft bushings are not roached. Also verify that there is not an intake gasket or carb base gasket leak.

Also, turning needles out (CCW) is rich, turning in is lean.

I'm over on the Island, from Vancouver originally. When I first started riding I would put on the 6mm stiched and sealed suit with gloves, boots, and hood and rip it up year round. Now I stick with dirtbiking when its cold, hard to get motivated to put on the suit and get wet....getting old and lame I guess, lol

thanks guys, I feel like such a rookie.... I pressure tested both the carb and the engine, checked pop off, replace needles and seats, etc.....and I forget to adjust the cable, that's what it was! LMAO!! It's responding very good now so I guess it's time to suit up and head to the lake for fine tuning.
    I appreciate the help..........Rookie out!!lol
