whats the deal with the wet jet 701 61x motors?

are the wet jet 61x motors better than a normal 61x that would come in a yami? cause i noticed that when someone has a wet jet 701 they always make sure to let everyone know that it is out of a wet jet.

Painted a better gold-ish color and some came with a better intake manifold setup and 46mm mikuni.

so the only diffrence in the 61x in a wet jet and the 61x in say a blaster is the color? i was just under the impression by reading some of these threads that the wet jet motor was better for some reason and thats why people have a 61x out of a wet jet they aways advertise it at a wet jet 61x instead of just saying that it has a 61x

Re: whats the deal with the wet jet 701 61x motors?

Certain Wet Jet models from 1995-1997 came with some or all of the following "mods" on their 61x motors:

Intake manifold manufactured by Westcoast. It has built in reed stuffers (still uses OEM type yami 61x reeds and blocks), and a true 46mm SBN Mikuni with "unique" stud spacing (wider than a typical 44SBN).

Westcoast head with 31cc domes. (Uses OEM type gasket, so compression is 160-ish psi.)

Westcoast exhaust system. It was just like the systems that westcoast made for the B1s and SJs, except the front half of the chamber had a rearward exit (B1 went in front of the motor and SJ went straight forward). The system is heavy as hell, but made decent power - when it isn't leaking. Oh, and the B1 and SJ systems were westcoast blue, the wet jet exhausts were black.

The models that has some/all of these "mods" were the Duo300, 300ZX, and Kraze (I think those were the models names used to refer to them). Anyhow, I've bought/wrenched on/looked at maybe 20 of these skis, and I've seen some "inconsistencies" as to what they were equipped with. Here is what (I THINK) I know :

    1) All of them used the westcoast exhaust system. At least I've never seen any inconsistencies there, and the OEM yami systems only fit these skis with a bit of grinding around the hull opening and cutting the tray under the seat.
    2) All of the Kraze's I've seen had the westcoast intake manifold and 46mm carb.
    3) Some of the Kraze's I've seen had an OEM 61x head, and not the westcoast head.
    4) Some of the Duo300s and 300ZXs I've seen had an OEM 61x head, OEM 61x intake manifold, and OEM 44SBN carb - the only thing "special" on these WJs was the exhaust. I don't recall ever seeing a Duo300 with the westcoast intake set up, but I think I've seen 300ZX's with it.
    5) Somewhere, somehow, there is a version of the westcoast intake manifold that has typical OEM 44SBN stud spacing.
    6) I've got an old pwc mag at home somewhere that has all the specs for all the skis offered in 1995 or so. All 3 of the Wet Jet models equipped with 61x yami motors were rated at 75hp. So, as far as how that makes any sense when all of them don't necessarily have the same set ups, go figure??? Your guess is as good as mine. My guess is WJ production went forward with or without certain parts.
    7) The gold paint was applied right over the OEM yami paint, no diassembly, no nuthin'. The 61x motors all look like they came from yami, got shot with gold real quick, and got stuck in the skis. It is common to see that the paint coverage is rather thin on the underside of the flywheel cover.
    8) I've heard rumors that the "fully loaded" WJs (with all the good "mods") really made more like 90hp. Having experienced a WJ 701 in several SJs (one of them is mine), with the good intake/carb, all with 160-185psi heads, and a/m pipes, 90hp seems like a reasonable estimate. I seem to recall that the Kraze models were known to perform about the same or a bit quicker than the 80hp 701 Waveraiders of that time.

Long story short, if you're buying a wet jet for the purpose of a motor transplant, IMHO, you must see for yourself what is under the hood, as you cannot assume based upon which model it is.

Also, to be clear, the info this post is based upon my memory, and you must also consider the fact that the skis I've seen could have been changed after leaving the factory, as I've had no way to really confirm many of their histories. Will the westcoast exhaust on these Wetjets fit any Yamaha models? Will it fit in a SJ, Fx-1 or B1 without major modifications?

id have to say that they would fit other 701 models as long as the pipe being used doesnt depend on any bosses being on the head for support.
