    650sx FPP running problems

Ok, so I got a hold of a Factory Pipe and installed it the other day. I took it out for the first time today and it ran pretty good. BUT I noticed that after sitting for a while it was hard to start. Was like slower cranking, sounded almost like the exhaust was full of water and the engine didn't like the back pressure. After it cleared up it would start fine. It would not do this if I fell off and started it shortly afterwards. Any ideas?

I guess I'll also say that I NEVER had this problem before the FPP pipe...

Seems like you need to spend some time with your carb, your pipe is fine.

    Re: 650sx FPP running problems

That may be the case, but it's just weird to me that I NEVER had this issue before... I'm still running the original 38 keihin and have never rebuilt it in the two years running it. Only adjustment I have made to carb was turning the H side 1/8 turn according to the Factory Pipe 650sx instructions...

Ok, so I found this with my bore scope. I haven't done a compression check yet. Front cylinder looks washed out and rear looks super rich... 20171002_184650.jpg20171002_184617.jpg

BLRider , do you care to elaborate on "spend some time with your carb" ....? That statement doesn't help me out any. Should I take it off and rebuild it, should I be adjusting my H or Low needles a certain way, change my jets due to upgraded exhaust, checking pop off, what direction do I go based on my symptoms?

You have arguably the best pipe for a 650 that was ever made and it'll last you through all your modifications. Factory pipe gave some carb adjustments in their paperwork but there is much more to a good running motor than just a screw setting on a carb. Elevation, water temperature, timing, octane all play into a good tune, I searched out a document for you to read that may help you.

    Re: 650sx FPP running problems

I have read that page before, but never paid much attention to the tuning of carb part since I never had an issue before. So first I'll check compression just to be sure where that is at. If that is good I'll head to the lake and try and tune the carb on the trailer for my low side and then high side afterward. Thanks for the link.

    Re: 650sx FPP running problems

I had bottom screw about 1/2 turn out and top about 1/4 out. Was trying to cool the pipe for better bottom end. I have now closed the top and was gonna try with just the bottom open the 1/2 turn. That bottom screw is a pain in the *** the get to with it all assembled.
