    Best Gasket Sealer(s)?

I am going to vacuum test the 650cc engine in my wife's X2. For the test, I plan to remove the exhaust to pipe gasket and also remove the carburetor to intake manifold gasket and temporarily replace them both with 1/16" thick rubber sheet in the same shape as the removed gaskets.

[Note: There has been a little setback regarding the aluminum exhaust manifold to pipe portion of this job because one of the three bolt holes is stripped because the prior owner cross-threaded 10mm 1.50 pitch bolts into the 10mm 1.25 pitch manifold bolt holes. But I digress.]

This is what Group K says about air leaks due to gaskets without sealer:

"Intake gaskets, particularly ones with no sealer on them, are always candidates for small air leak"

    http://www.groupk.com/tec-airleak.htm

ABOUT AIR LEAKS - The engine you save could be your own

    So my questions are:

    1. What is the best sealer, if any, for gaskets on the intake side of the engine? and

    2. What is the best sealer, if any, for gaskets on the exhaust side of the engine? (I noticed that there was some sort of silicone on the manifold to pipe gasket when I removed it.)

I know I am asking basic questions, but I appreciate all your help.

Three bond 1211 is what everyone has told me, it's all I use on 2 stroke. It's pricey but ive never had a leak and looks like what I've seen on lots of factory motors.

+1 For Threebond 1211. We have used it without incident on every engine we've built since about 2010.

I've been using yamabond 4 for years and never had an issue. It's way cheaper than threebond.

Three bond 1211 is my first (only) choice.

I personally would not use threebond for anything except case halves. If everything else is decent its not needed. Install gaskets dry, if they are fiber/paper gaskets I coat them in grease first for easy removal when I want to change them. No sealant on intake gaskets, exhaust gaskets, head gaskets, etc.

    Re: Best Gasket Sealer(s)?

To All whom have posted so far and (hopefully) will post later. I ordered some Three Bond 1211, but I also read the reviews (excellent) on Amazon, and my natural inclination in these things is to do what bandit88 suggests, use Three Bond 1211 (if needed) for case halves and nothing for intake or exhaust. That is apparently how this engine was rebuilt. If my vacuum test reveals that the case is not leaking without Three Bond, I will not use it on the case halves. Because I want to be able to open and separate the case halves and other things without damaging them by having to use pullers, sledge hammers, screw drivers, etc.

Since I am now the proud owner of a Mitivac 8510, my idea is to vacuum test through the pulse line all of our engines every couple of years or so and replace crank or flywheel seals as needed and I would like to do so with the least violence to the case as possible. Because, correct me if I am wrong, the case is the least likely leak culprit, while the crank seals are the most likely. And no amount of Three Bond 1211 or Yamabond on the case halves will prevent crank seals from leaking?

You must use the threebond on case halves. They will leak otherwise. Nothing else needs sealant.
