js550/650 build

[Lake St. Clair Rider]

Bought a 1988 js550 for $240 dollars that needs some love. The engine was full of water so i decided to throw in a 650 I have laying around. I plan to tear everything down and repaint and re-assemble everything. As of right now I need a 550/650 conversion plate, steering cable, am waterbox, 650 pipe and maybe a different pitch prop (unsure on what size works best). Will post pictures along the way. Took all the decal and turf off as well as all the parts. It is now ready to be sanded then painted. Also have a few cracks to patch. What should I use to patch these cracks? 650sx pipe found, still need a prop, waterbox, and steering cable. Lastly, are 650 steering cables the same as a 550?

The Cables are not the same.

I believe I have most of the parts you need.

-Conversion plate
-550 steering cable
-steep Skat impeller for the conversion

Started sanding down the the hull. Also thank you to still standing, jafaboy and dpast08 for the conversion/650 stuff. I still need 650 bolts to mount to the engine plate.

installed the conversion plate and set it in the hull to see how it looks. Still have a lot more cosmetic work to do before I can put it back together. Slowly coming together.

to properly repair the cracks and not have to worry about them coming back or getting worse, youll need to and down the cracked area to get as much of the crack out as possible, then get some epoxy resin and some cloth, add several layers overlapping the entire cracked area by a few inches,then sand down and repaint.

if that filler you used isnt made for smc, it most likely wont hold. the vintage kawasakis are made of sheet molded compound or SMC and require very clean sanded surface and epoxy based fillers or resins. if the filler you used works with smc then you should be ok.

i used pwc filler, I’ll have to see if it’s made for smc. Thanks
