    2002 ultra 150 dies after 10 sec

    Hi everyone!

I bought a ultra 150 with a bad crankshaft as a project, engine came in parts.
After buying a new crankshaft and replacing all gaskets and installing everything it starts up but then dies about 10 seconds in.
when i try to start it again it it's very hard to start but fires up after a few attempts and then dies like before.
I took it down to the ramp and started the ski on the trailer and after a while a managed to get it running if i hold down the throttle, WOT is 4000 rpm and if I let off the throttle it dies. everytime dies it's hard to fire it up again.

it also have a warning light on the display and fuel gauge says empty even though its almost full.

I did compression check and it reads 120,120,120.
two of the spark plugs looked dry and one looked wet and black.

Do you guys have any suggestions of what could be wrong with it?
Would be very thankful for any advice I can get!

here is a video when trying to start it on land if it could help.

cant hear the vid ! , from your description ""in this order > it could be the fuel peticuck is gunged up , bypass it ! , clean the fuel filter ,i if it is stock dont replace it just clean it with fresh fuel ,, take the carbs apart and clean them ,while you're there check the diaphram in the fuel pump for a split!

Thanks! The fuel selector seems fine, but the fuel filter had some dirt in it, even a couple of mosquitos. Is that enough to cause it? IMG_20170918_154338.jpg

Check spark on cylinder with wet plug. Either bad plug or wire or coil etc.

that is water in the separator / filter , drain the fuel cell completely and put fresh fuel in.there is probably crud in the bottom of the tank and now its sucked its way through the fuel system , run a separate fuel cell 'like an outboard cell or such' that has new fuel in it strait to the "IN" on the fuel pump, RETURN to a waste can, if you hve not yet pulled the carbs apart then dont till you try the above first""

Re: 2002 ultra 150 dies after 10 sec

    Thanks for the advices!

    Here is a little update!

I connected an external gastank, and put the return to waste. It seems to work a little better but it still shuts off after a while.

the last thing i hear after the engine dies is the starter spinning and coming to a stop, which makes me think that the starter gear is spinning all the time, is it supposed to sound like that? Is it possible that I have placed the starter gear the wrong way inside the magneto cover?

Re: 2002 ultra 150 dies after 10 sec

Yes, I'm pretty sure that's how I did.

I have now taken off the carbs trying to see if that is the problem. It seems like I can keep the engine going if I idle it pretty high, 4000-5000 rpm. When I let off the throttle I can sometimes keep it from dying if I hit the throttle again, but sometimes the rpm is to low so it dies anyway.

Could it be the pilot screw adjustment?

I looked in the manual about the pilot screw, but I can't seem to find the screw on mine compared to the illustration. Could you explain which one it is? What other things can I look at on the carb? Pump?
