    First Time JS 550 owner

Picked up my first 1985 JS550

Now I have no clue where to start with these things. It fires up good but takes a lot of turning over to get it fired up. I've noticed that it also bogs when at 3/4 throttle.

I would like to get this thing running healthy and bump up the horsepower a bit. It would also be nice to consider add ons to improve the ride ability.

What would be my top 5 add ons ? And does my carb need a rebuild or do I need to just upgrade it ?
Please if you guys could just tell me what parts and where to buy em !

Welcome! Looks like a pretty clean ski. I would start with a Compression check to verify the condition of your motor. Then I would adjust carb and install new plugs. A primer will help with the hard starting. Start with the basics before trying to upgrade power. Check out the js 440/550 bible in the vintage section, there is literally tons of info.

Compression check was done at a tick over 120 psi.
    Replaced spark plugs.

If you still want more power I would suggest an aftermarket impeller like a skat trak 15 or 15.5 pitch for more low end. You could mill the stock head a little for more compression and add a Jet Power exhaust off a 1987 or newer js550. After that I would swap in a 650 or 750 or just buy bigger badder ski.

Get it running right as is before adding anything too it. If the motor has never been apart, it needs new crank seals. No point on continuing until those are replaced.

You don't necessarily need a rebuild. Research bn38 carb adjustment. The base carb settings are one turn out from lightly seated on both the high and low mixture screws. Most of the 440/550's are hard to start but you can add a primer to help with that.

Why would the carb be off in the first place ? Given that no one has tampered with the adjustments on the carb
