1991 Wave Runner III 650 questions

Anyone ride this ski? I'm only getting about 34 mph top end on it. Is that all I can expect, or is this motor just tired and needs to be refreshed? I bought it and a trailer for $200 about 5 years ago. Can't complain. Gets people out on the water and gets you wet when its hot out! Maybe not worth tearing into if its running well. What's yall's opinion?

Yep, that's about right. Stable old couches that run forever. You have to throw a lot of money into them to get over 40 steadily. My vxr topped out at 38 when running perfect.
Gonna throw a 701 in it and make another fishing ski

Stable old couch!! LOL!! We have a 95 Yamaha with the 700, or thereabouts, and the ski keeps up with the seadoo 717 GSI. Not as stable and looses power as soon as water leaves the jet, but reliable as hell. Speed wise, it's right there tho. If I can find another 700, would it bolt up to everything in the 650 wrIII, or do you need computer, etc. to make it work?

That's another question - why does the old yamaha's loose so much power when they don't have good water? Is that a intake grate issue?

701 is a bored out version of the 650 block, so, yes - slap it in. Any additional modifications might require an improved exhaust system and always look for an impeller upgrade if you give it more power.
Once again, yes, the WR3 has a substandard intake grate. Only a couple of upgrade options there. Me and my boy love the 91 vxr couch though... just busted the steer cable last time out though. Lasted 26 years so I'm happy to replace it. Again, Chris at Jetmaniac will let you know what you need and what is just blind.

Got 3 650s, and a VXR. All early 90s. I have learned a ton trying to get them for n the water with no issues. Not Speed demons, but motor work seems easy enough.

I love em. Not living on electronic parts that fail you at every wipe out.
Great way to learn to fix motors. My little guy loves to help too. We want to find an old SJ next. Not many here in Canada. All been raced and wrecked. Or cost $6K. Did they even cost that much new?

Well, I just found out that my kids were loading the old ski on a trailer that didn't fit just right, and when they pulled it out of the water, I guess the front end got hooked on the winch mount and tore the entire front end apart. I haven't seen it yet, but they said the fiberglass is all jacked up. Said it will leak bad as soon as we put it in the water.......ERRRRRRRRRRRR damn kids.

Naaa. The ski is sitting in the back yard now. Probably won't be touched for years... Besides, now I have two excellent running ski's, and bought another project ski. 2001 Yamaha XL700. This one needs boring and new pistons. The old WRIII was so slow anyway...
