Water, kerosene, doesn't matter unless the head is iron. Either way you cant just start pouring it in the dome and let it cause a meniscus. Cut a piece of plexiglass, drill a hole in it, and place it against the head on the gasket surface. Now you can fill through that hole and find the volume of the actual dome.

Pretty much... Except kerosene has less surface tension than water and it doesn't tend form a bunch of small bubbles toward the end when the fluid hits the bottom of the Plexiglas and adding 2-stroke oil to the mix reduces surface tension even more.

Except for the buret fluid this video is pretty much how I do it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V7V40ZWNgCo

    Guess I got lucky

Edit: This is not something I was told TO do or have ever told anyone TO do, but I tried it on a Mariner head before I installed it and it came out to 29 cc. Maybe I subconsciously forced it on myself ? I shaved a 650 Kawai head and got exactly 1 psi for every .001 I cut . Was told that was wrong, more like .0015 so , I dunno.

That's a good instructional and basically how we used to do it back in the day. We always used clean safety solvent and filled it to the top of the threads with the dome or head upright. Then subtracted the volume of the entire threaded portion.

The original question about the volume of an actual spark plug vs something solid plugging the hole: It might matter for NASA. But no way does it matter for building a personal watercraft. Pick one method and stick to it. Also, keep in mind that you shouldn't make a habit of trusting other people's numbers anyway. So your numbers vs. your other numbers are the things to be comparing with 100% confidence.

I can't even count, so what the heck does it matter? I like peanut butter, and have a tendency to smell my finger if the paper breaks.

That's why there are guys like Chris and Bill. They use a MUCH stronger paper.
