    Shaft seal ?

I am in the process of rebuilding my pump on my 01 rx di. One question I have is when I press in the oil shaft seal, what side faces outward? It seems kinda tight. The last seal I pressed in, I put it in so that the open end/the spring, was towards the bearing. When I put the shaft in, it folded over the seal and popped the spring out and messed it all up. Do I need to flip it around so the spring faces upward?

    Re: Shaft seal ?

If you're talking about the front seal of your jet pump the spring goes inside, hard flat surface facing the impeller. Grease the shaft and seal when you slide it forward then go slowly and rotate while you push.

Ok guys, I have one telling me one goes inside ones goes outside. Which one is it lol? If I'm pressing the bearing in, do I put the seal in with the spring facing upwards or downwards?

That's funny, I watched that same video before. I just thought I put in backwards is all.

The video is wrong....the spring on the seal goes outside.

I have installed many seals with the spring inside with no issues. You would think the seal goes inside to keep from deterioating but have since rebuild quite a few OEM jetpumps (never worked on) & the spring was on the outside.

NICE! Well I guess it really doesn't matter then. I've literally installed probably 100 of them with the spring to the inside. But I also use a double lip seal.

Well, I just got done installing it with the spring facing down, the flat part towards the impeller. Will it damage anything?

Seal 101 ----the spring side of a seal goes to the side with the most pressure. It may work either way in some cases but in applications where there can be a large differential pressure (pump/engine/transmission/ gearbox seal) going to atmosphere the seal needs to go with spring inward.

Seal must be installed so that lips raised edges are toward outside of housing (toward impeller).

Seal spring should face the impeller (out).
