Fears reckless jet skiers in Herne Bay are turning seafront into ‘wild west’

    By Jack Dyson
    Published: 06:00, 06 June 2020

An “explosion” of reckless jet skiers along the coast since the easing of lockdown has turned the seafront into the "wild west" and sparked fears someone could be killed.

Councillors are hoping to introduce a registration scheme for riders wanting to enter the water in Herne Bay and Whitstable, as well as fines for those caught speeding or motoring through designated bathing areas.

Heron representative Andrew Cook says he has received dozens of complaints from worried residents about several near-misses involving the vehicles over the last fortnight.

This comes after Canterbury City Council announced it had closed the launching ramp at Hampton ahead of this weekend and moved staff working there to the Neptune ramp.

Director of community services Suzi Wakeham said: “There is a small minority of jet skiers who are spoiling it for everyone else, so we need to take action.

“Before the coronavirus outbreak, we applied to the Secretary of State to change the by-laws, which will restrict the speed and width of the transit lane at Hampton.

"But this process has been delayed by the pandemic and we think it is wise to close it until we can better control water activity there.

“There is also a cross-party councillor working group developing a new registration and charging scheme which will further improve our ability to tackle problems and ensure our coast is still popular with visitors while keeping everyone safe.”

The change to the by-laws, which have not been updated since 1995, will see an eight-knot speed limit imposed along the entire seafront.

Ms Wakeham also says that more than 150 jet skiers arrived over the bank holiday weekend to use the local authority’s launch ramps, which is twice the number seen on an average day.

Cllr Cook, who is a member of the cross-party working group, witnessed jet skis “travelling at speed” within 300 metres of the shore between the pier and Hampton over the weekend.

“I’ve been getting about three complaints a day over the last two weeks – it’s been a lot more than you’d usually get,” he added.

    Heron councillor Andrew Cook

“We’re not sure, but we believe we have a lot of people coming in from outside the area. I had a report come in over the weekend about a near miss from three separate witnesses.

“We cannot afford to have another fatality; the residents are warning us there’s an issue.”

The bid to improve water safety comes three years after the death of Jordan Lupton off the coast of Hampton.

The 25-year-old suffered fatal injuries when he was struck by a jet ski as he was being towed in a rubber ring by another.

Seasalter councillor Ashley Clark, who chairs the working group, says the authority’s public space protection orders along the coast will be reviewed and expects a consultation on the proposed changes to take place in the next few weeks.

    Seasalter councillor Ashley Clark

“It’s not so much of an issue in Seasalter, but in Herne Bay it seems like the wild west. It’s quite horrific some of the near misses going on,” he explained.

“These people are hurtling around in close proximity to the shore on the jet skis – they have to realise they’re not the only people who use our sea.

“There are swimmers who are in fear and other users, such as kayakers and paddleboarders, can be disturbed by reckless and irresponsible behaviour.

“Me fear’s someone’s going to get killed by one of these imbeciles.”

16-year-old scammed out of more than $2,000 after buying jet skis online

By Dee Dee Gatton | June 24, 2020 at 7:09 PM EDT - Updated June 24 at 7:09 PM

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) - Buyer beware. If something online looks too good to be true, it’s probably a scam.

Keith Hanson, 16, in Mooresville thought he was getting the deal of a lifetime for two jet skis but he was left high and dry.

“In the beginning I was shocked, I was really upset,” said his mother, Dianne Hanson.

She says she can’t believe what happened to her son who has been saving his money and dreaming about buying two jet skis.

“It’s something he really wanted, he’s wanted for two years,” Dianna said.

Hanson, on June 9, saw an ad on Facebook marketplace for two 2007 SEA DOO GTX jet skis and a trailer for $1,200. He contacted the owner identified as Olga Wanner who claimed to be a verified eBay seller. She wanted him to pay for the purchase using eBay gift cards.

“We bought the eBay cards for $1,200, he paid for them, we have emails stating that eBay verified the payments and they would be delivered on June 15,” Dianne said.

But days later, the seller wanted more money to complete the deal.

“Then he got another email stating that he needed to pay another $1,000 for insurance that this woman also had to pay but that we would get refunded for that. It was like an insurance thing,” Dianne said.

They purchased another $1,000 in eBay gift cards and completed the transaction. That was the last correspondence with the seller who kept the gift cards and the jet skis.

WBTV responded to the same ad and the scam artist offered to sell us the same two jet skis she just sold to the Hansons. When WBTV told her we were reaching out for the Hansons, there was no response.

“What I’m concerned about too is they’re advertising all over, these same jet skis for sale. It might not just be me or my son losing money, it may be ten people or 20 people,” Dianne said.

Days later, the same ad for the jet skis popped up on Facebook in Virginia and Tennessee.

WBTV contacted eBay to see if they could trace the gift cards used to make the purchase. Their response:

“This is a scam that actually takes place off eBay, but uses the eBay brand name in attempt to instill trust in the transaction.”

WBTV also reached out to the Mooresville Police Department.

“It is a common scam on internet sites. Fraudulent information and photos are posted, but no product is ever delivered after payment. The simplest guidance we can provide is ‘do not purchase items online using gift cards – and certainly do not send them in advance of receiving the merchandise,‘ Assistant Chief Eric Henderson said.

“The person I feel worse for is my son. That’s who I feel bad for,” said Hanson.

WBTV asked eBay if it’s possible to use their money-back guarantee policy to refund the Hansons’ purchase, but since the deal wasn’t completed on eBay, there is no way to refund the gift cards.

'Horrific tragedy' on Sierra reservoir: Lightning kills man on jet ski, burns son

    Mike Moffitt, SFGATE
    July 28, 2020
    Updated: July 29, 2020 2:27 p.m.

Lightning struck and killed a Nevada man while he was on a jet ski Saturday, July 25, 2020, on Stampede Reservoir in Sierra County.

    Andy Tullis/AP

The man’s son, who was in the water next to the personal watercraft, was knocked unconscious and "severely burned" by the blast of electricity, according to an eyewitness.

Shelley Brewster Bryant, who witnessed the incident from her family’s boat, about 30 feet from the jet ski, wrote on Facebook that several other people were injured by the lightning strike. She called it a "horrific tragedy."

“We had some minor damage to our boat ... our sonar was fried from the strike and it knocked the wind out of our 9-year-old. She has some minor chest pain today but is doing well,” Bryant said in the post.

The dead man was identified as Eugene Arao, 47. Bryant said rescuers performed CPR on his son before paramedics arrived.

The son, who is a minor, was reportedly recovering in Truckee Hospital, but his condition was not immediately known. Divers later found Arao’s submerged body about 20 yards from the shoreline.

Cal Fire/Sierra County spokeswoman Laura Brown said the storm hit swiftly and may have caught Arao and several other boaters near the reservoir's dock and boat ramp by surprise. She said thunderstorms have been occurring in area almost every day.

Lightning fatalities are relatively rare in California. From 1959 to 2016, there were 34 deaths in the state, compared to 491 in Florida, the deadliest state for lightning strikes over the period.

KTVU Fox 2 reported Saturday’s death was the first lightning fatality in California since July 18, 2015, according to John Jensenius, a lightning safety specialist at the National Lightning Safety Council.

Florida Cop Chases By Car, By Foot, Then By Jet Ski in Wild Video

    By TooFab Staff
    8/3/2020 4:07 PM PT

    Walter County Sheriff's Office

When trying to out-swim police — don't leave them your stolen jet ski.

Police chases are as American as eating apple pie while watching baseball in blue jeans.

But while the car and even helicopter versions are commonplace, one Florida Sheriff's department found itself in an unusual pursuit on Friday: on a jet ski.

Responding to a tip-off about burglary suspect Clyde Merrill Hunter, Walton County Sheriff's Office deputies descended on a Miramar Beach address he had been staying at for more than a week.

There they found numerous stolen goods in and outside the residence, including the registrations from two stolen waverunners hidden in the bottom of a bag of his clothes.

Hunter was then spotted fleeing the area on a jet ski into Choctawhatchee Bay; but officers tracked him as they drove along the freeway, as he headed into Hogtown Bayou and towards the Cessna Park boat launch.

Riding into the bay he dived off the jet ski and ran for the boat ramp; but he quickly realized the officers had cut him off.
Bodycam footage shows him fleeing back into the water in an attempt to swim off; however one of the quick-thinking officers commandeered the stolen jet ski himself, jumping aboard and chasing him down, corralling him before he got very far.

The video shows the shirtless and exhausted Hunter in neck deep water, being forced back to shore by the jet ski-riding cop, his hands in the air.
Aboard the stolen jet ski deputies found a bag containing burglary tools including bolt cutters, a hammer, drill, drill bit, screwdriver, pry tool, pick tool used for ignitions, and a wrench.

Hunter — who had an active felony warrant from Walton County for grand theft auto — had only just been released on July 23rd following charges of several vehicle burglaries, armed and unarmed; theft of a firearm; and theft of several motor vehicles.

"After he was released on bond, it appears Hunter continued his criminal behavior while on felony probation for his previous charges of grand theft," the Sheriff's office said.

Following his latest alleged spree of crimes, Hunter is now also charged with grand theft auto, violation of felony probation, possession of burglary tools, obstruction, burglary, and grand theft.

Jet ski fire on shore of Island Lake results in injuries

    Created: August 29, 2020 07:06 AM

Police say a jet ski fire on the shore of Island Lake just before 7:00pm Friday resulted in injuries and spread to a nearby boat and jet ski.

The St. Louis County Sheriff's Office said the fire was first observed on the shore of Island Lake by a fire fighter from the Lakewood Fire Department who was out on the lake. It was later determined to be a jet ski and a pontoon on fire.

According to police, Ann and Timothy Eliason went to go for a jet ski ride on Island Lake. After Ann left, police say it is suspected there was some type of explosion when Tim started his jet ski.

Ann returned and found the jet ski on fire and Tim unconscious in the water. Police say Ann performed life saving measures and was able to revive him. Both were transported to a hospital in Duluth by Mayo Ambulance. It is unclear if both were hurt and it is unclear the extent of their injuries.

Gnesen Fire and first responders arrived on scene and attended to the Eliasons and extinguished the fire.

The St Louis County Sheriff's Office, St Louis County Rescue Squad, Minnesota DNR and Mayo Ambulance also responded.

Elderly Couple Trapped in Flooded Home Rescued by Firefighter on Jet Ski

The firetrucks and rescue vehicles kept passing her house even after Elaine Hulgan, 76, wrote “IN ATTIC HELP” on the front door.

So Hulgan’s 84-year-old husband resorted to his best emergency signal: an ear-splitting whistle.

The noise rose above the din, and a firefighter on a Jet Ski soon rescued the couple and their two dogs off the front stoop of their brick home. [snip]
