5-year-old boy drives jet ski onto beach, injuring woman

    Published: Sunday, September 17, 2017 @ 2:23 PM
    Updated: Sunday, September 17, 2017 @ 2:21 PM

Authorities say 5-year-old boy started a jet ski along a Lake Michigan beach in northwestern Indiana, which ran onto shore and badly hurt a woman.

Indiana Conservation Officers say the boy's father was helping another jet ski operator with mechanical troubles Saturday afternoon at Michigan City Beach when the boy climbed on the jet ski and pushed the ignition button. The boy became scared and turned the throttle as he grabbed onto the handle bars.

Officials say the jet ski ran onto the beach and hit a 60-year-old Mishawka (mish-ah-WAH'-kuh), Indiana, woman as she sat in a lawn chair about 30 feet from the water's edge. The woman suffered a serious foot injury and was taken to a hospital for treatment.

Principal dies, daughter, 4, critically injured in Clearwater jet ski accident

    By WFLA Web Staff
    Published: September 23, 2017, 6:12 pm Updated: September 25, 2017, 1:18 pm

CLEARWATER, Fla. (WFLA) — A charter school principal was killed and his 4-year-old daughter seriously injured in a boating accident in Clearwater on Saturday.

The crash happened near 941 Bay Esplanade around 4:45 p.m.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission said a jet ski collided with a boat operated by 67-year-old Thomas Carey of Clearwater. Carey is a well-known attorney in Clearwater who has been an advocate against drunken driving.

The 52-year-old operator of the jet ski, identified Sunday as Dr. Craig Butz of Altamonte Springs, was taken to Morton Plant in critical condition. He later died. Butz was the executive director of Pepin Academies, which is a charter school for children with learning disabilities.

His 4-year-old daughter was airlifted to Bayfront Health Hospital. On Sunday, the FWC said she remains in critical condition.

An investigation into the incident is ongoing.

Pepin Academies released the following statement regarding Butz’ passing:

"We are shocked and saddened to hear of the unexpected and tragic loss of Pepin Academies’ Executive Director, Dr. Craig Butz. In my four years working with Dr. Butz, he advanced the mission of Pepin Academies tenfold. His wisdom and intelligence was matched by his passion and exuberance for the staff and students of our schools. He was a leader, a champion, and a friend. The pain of his loss, both professionally and personally, will be felt for an eternity. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, especially his young daughter Teagan who remains in critical condition. We ask that their privacy be respected during this sad and difficult time. Pepin Academies will have bereavement specialists at the school on Monday to help grieving students and staff cope with this tragic loss.”

Mayors Of Norway Attempt To Ban Personal Watercraft

    OCEAN PRISELAC | 4 October, 2017 at 00:01

The mayors of Norway missed their goal to ban jet skis. Threatened with class action lawsuits and the like, the mayors were left with nothing. They had to give in to the wants of PWC riders. According to an article published in the Norwegian online magazine, SLTE, a large group of riders met with lawyers and stood their ground against the mayors. The battle between local mayors and personal watercraft riders had been going on since 1997.

The riders and attorneys based their legal actions on the new Dispute Act that was brought into play in 2008. The Act states that a large group of people or interest groups may initiate legal proceedings against laws such as the ones local mayors wanted to implement.

The long standing ban on jet skis was removed. It was a strict ban and we’re glad the Norwegian personal water craft riders and attorneys won their. The ban restricted skis to only 400 meters offshore. Riders were only allowed to travel at 5 knots in areas with land on two sides up to 800 meters in salt water and 1000 meters in fresh water. These particular regulations were difficult to comprehend.

Today, PWC’s can follow the same laws and regulations of all other boats. The government did make allowances for the local mayors to have an option to regulate boats/pwc in some areas. A few mayors went ballistic over the loss and decided they wanted to ban skis altogether. Furthermore, the mayors sent new regulations out for a public hearing. Those angry local mayors were denied by a higher form of government. A statement sent out by the superior government reads that jet skis can be regulated in special harbors and other small areas such as beaches.

The fight was won by the personal watercraft community. Kudos!

    Victim of scam

A resident of the 100 block of Ashlawn Avenue reported to police on Sept. 29 that he had responded to an online ad for a couple of jet skis and sent a wire transfer to the supposed seller. However, police were told that the sale was a scam.
