    Jetski Rules, Regulations and Laws

    I'm sure there's a post about this but I wasn't finding much.

What's the policy on owning and riding two strokes out on the lakes around Austin? Do they have to be a certain year and grandfathered in or what?

If you could steer me in the right direction that would be awesome. Thanks!

No restrictions that specially apply to 2 strokes. All of mine are currently 2 strokes and I frequently ride Lake Austin, Travis, and LBJ. Lake Austin has restrictions for PWCs on Memorial Day weekend, 4th of July, and Labor Day weekend. Of course you can't ride on Town Lake/Lady Bird Lake but that's on my bucket list to braaap up and down it someday.

Yes to the above. Also, feel free to call the local lake patrol before you ride to get the up to date details on what you can and can't do.

Really? I thought there was an overall EPA ban or something that went into play in 2011? I just emailed a shop to ask about a new ski and their response was that you can't even register the ski as a recreational watercraft. Here's what he said:

"These new Superjets are for closed course riding only, they cannot be registered in the state of Texas as a recreational watercraft so they are restricted to close course riding only. I have one superjet on the lot that has never been run."

I believe that Yamaha has an agreement that they are sold to racers only. It doesn't take much to qualify as a racer. I rode a SJ last summer that was a 2014 model and newly registered in TX in 2015.

This thread indicates it's not a big deal:

Re: Jetski Rules, Regulations and Laws

I emailed Granbury Motor Sports with this question: Are there any special restrictions in TX to purchase or register the Yamaha Superjet? I've heard some information that it is only for racing and closed course use only.

    The response was:
You have to be a IJSBA Member and you can ride it on any lake or reservoir. The membership is $50 but we can register you and take care of the licensing and its about $8700 out the door. Please do not hesitate to call or email me with any questions or concerns you may have.
