    Westcoast RC-520 club

Wanted to start a new thread to talk about these engines
roll call who all has one?
what your setup is, carb, pump, prop, pipe, etc
talk about your hull or handling mods.
    Maintence or parts for these
    pictures or stories
just want to post it all in one spot since some of us have been talking in other threads

    Welcome to the Club!

stole this picture from another thread because I haven't had mine open yet. I've never seen ports like this before.

    Re: Westcoast RC-520 club

Mine is in a 82 440 hull that I added rear exhaust to.
The cylinder recieved a new sleeve before I got it so I had Newmiller match up all the porting and re-shape a stock head to run 91 octane.
He recommended against a Westcoast head for this set-up because of the potential of sealing problems ... I had bought a brand new one too
Has a custom modified intake manifold with dual SBN 44's that was on a previous PJS T1 cylinder which blew a crank bearing and took out everything
Running a PJS 2500 reed pipe thru a Trioval waterbox...
    Skat straight 15 prop
    Cleaned up pump casting marks
Jetnetics charging flywheel with new magnets ... stock 1982 e-box
Pretty much a sleeper and runs real strong
Couldn't pull a 17 pitch without "hopping" the ski to get up on the pipe... then it ripped. I like the low end hit so the straight 15 is perfect for me.
    Have fun on your ride!
    Next?

    Re: Westcoast RC-520 club

Bruce - is that a 440 or 550 pump?. I suspect a 550 given your performance issue. Also, a Westcoast head with interchangeable domes seals perfectly fine with an ultra green paper head gasket from gasket technologies in Havasu. The steel ring seals the combustion chamber and the paper (no RTV sealant) swells with the water and seals just fine.

I suspect Chris was cautioning against a copper gasket with a Westcoast head as I have seen the domes spin when torqueing down the spark plugs....even with RTV sealant.

I'm really confused why you guys are listening to Chirs Newmiller regarding any kind of head CC to octane ratings. He is the guy that refuted Kawasaki ever making a 550 engine with stock 175-185 PSI compression and with that, rating the engine OK to run 87 octane. I have already posted Kawasaki's literature on this. All the 550 reed motors fall into this spec.

I keep preaching out here that static compression readings on a 2 stroke are bogus numbers to equate to detonation. Two strokes develop 1.5X atmospheric pressure when stuffing the cylinder with air/fuel mix once the pipe starts working at it's tuned RPM and temperature. I don't think there can be a calculation to correlate the two. But for sure, engine operating combustion chamber pressure is much higher than any static measurement on a compression gauge. So if pressure in the chamber is the issue, and the issue of detonation only occurs when the engine is running, why do we care what the non-running pressure is?

Controlling your temperature is the only way to ensure against detonation. Yes, reducing combustion chamber temps will help here. Running 100 PSI compression is "safer" than 200 PSI. But that is not the only component. Richen up your mixture. Run a little more water into your exhaust. Keep you ignition advance in check.

And I know Chris preaches some of this as well. From what I have seen of him, he really misses the compression gauge reading portion of the equation.

just think about the total equation...not just one component.
1993 Laser Jet F15 - Mild port to PJS Cylinder.
1992 550 SX - R&R port Kawi Reed, Kind of fast.
    1989 JS 550 - PJS motor Dual 46's, 50 MPH on GPS.
    1989 Wet Jet - Upgraded 1994 50 HP motor & exhaust.
1986 JS 550 - Engine built. Working on fiberglass!
    1976 JS 400 - Pretty much just a shell.

    Re: Westcoast RC-520 club

WFO Speedracer is rebuilding one for me and dropping into a 93 SX hull. Westcoast Dual carb set up with dual Westcoast intake mani, Westcoast red e made 38s and velocity stacks, Westcoast dual spark ignition with Westcoast Dual plug head and 19cc domes (very rare), RC520 engine that had been completely rebuilt , Westcoast 7 ring pipe with exhaust mani, Westcoast water box, Westcoast gas tank, Skat Trak 17 prop, Westcoast ride plate and intake grate. I have more money in this ski than I care to pay, but this will be pretty much a Pro Mod replica from 1991. All I need is the Westocast dual flow hood and it will be just like the original pro mod I sold to Gary Hart back in 2013 (except for the dual spark and head).
When it's done, I will post to the group.

Noprabs, that sounds like a sweet build. How do you hook up the dual plug head? Dual coils in a custom box??
There is a company that is making the old school graphics that would be cool for your ski
They have the pjs, butch, westcoast and others

I know these are top end motors but how do you think they would work with a half pipe? Maybe get some of that low end back.

I had a Coffman 1/2 pipe on my 520 cyl. Loved it!

My lowend is great. Just try a 15 or 15.5 when you get a chance
Think you will like it. Btw it is a 440 pump
