Smoke on the Water - Water Chamber Melted

    2004 F12x

And it was my Winter Ride.
8š Celsius and 20 crazy jet skiers upriver.

After about 30/40 minutes my ski died. I was about 4/4.5k RPM.
Fire it up and it worked very rough for a couple of seconds and i knew something was wrong.I saw same smoke exiting from the front, and took the seats of. So much smoke came out for some minutes...
After a while i could see the Hose Water Lock 18351-HW1-670 was not in its place. So all the exhaust was inside the engine compartment. So it died because all the exhaust gas was being sent back to the engine again.
    Everything was hot.
    No water was coming inside.
So i was towed in to the margin in the place where we were going to lunch, that was about one mile away.

Managed to to put the hose back in its place. Started the ski and it worked for a few seconds, Thought i was safe.
After a few seconds it started running a little rough. I accelerated a bit to keep it working and run for 1/2 minutes at about 4000 RPM and it died.

    Back to the Margin.
After a while started it up again. Fine for 10/20 seconds. Rough and i turn it off.
So i left the ski there and went back for my car and trailer.
So i took it out of the Water. It was already night but i had new plugs on it.
Took it down and started it up still in the trailer. Same problem. Fine for 10/20 seconds then Rough.
When i was inspecting the area i saw a lot of water coming in. (The back of the ski was inside the water due to the position of the trailer.

So only then i found out the Water chamber melted. So i guess the hose came out because the temperature deformed the Outlet EX 18345-HW1-670.

    Back Home.
    Arrived at midnight.
Started it at the hose with the seats of. Worked fine for 20 seconds and started working rough, but did nīt stop.
No Water was coming out the Water Chamber. Maybe a little could be falling inside the engine compartment. Was tired, must check that better.

Well, so i need a new Water Chamber and Outlet EX.

But the problem that made the water Chamber Melt probably is still there.
Any problem in a water passage.
Any exhaust gas leak inside the engine compartment.

Any way i would like to have it running of in the hose before spending money in the Water Chamber.
Anyway i have no money now for a big repair so i better find out the best solution for the problem.

Re: Smoke on the Water - Water Chamber Melted

    finally took it apart.
The Mister hole in the Muffler looked ok.
there was water in the water box, Could n t see sand. The walls of the eater box were black.

Prior i started the ski on the hose. I looked ok. There was not much water coming out from the exhaust but there was some. I have no other ski to compare it so...

I wonder if enough water is getting the muffler.
Of if there was a clog that was gone when i ran it on the hose....

Did you run water through the muffler while it was out to make sure water was flowing through the mister hole? And is water flowing out the pisser good?

    Hi,

yes. i made the test, The mister hole is ok .
On the hose water comes out from the pisser. But that doesnīt mean that water is coming out while in the water. That was something important i forgot to check while in the water.
Thatīs something i must check after i assembled the ski when the parts arrive. Its cold now but i will do it.

This thing is puzzling me. This thing should not happened.
Maybe the problem was based on a slow degradation of the plastic elbow.

If i had a clog in the circuit before the manifold i guess i would had other problems in the ski. NOt only the melted elbow and water chamber.

I had this same issue on a 2005 R12x and I've seen several others on the forum have the same issue. Usually it's like the diagram Skidoc showed you it's the mister hole clogged and it was on mine.Either way If you melted the exhaust elbo then the problem is your not getting water to the exhaust camber. And if the mister hole is clear then its clogged somewhere ahead of that and water isn't even making it to the mister hole. If you have shop manual there is a diagram of the water flow through the entire system so you can see how to trace it backwards. If you don't have it I can send you a copy of the diagram or I believe Deanthemachine posted a download of the manual.

Re: Smoke on the Water - Water Chamber Melted

What is the correct level of the water in the WaterBox?
You have two sections in the Water Box linked by a passage.
Should the water level be higher than that passage?
Mine was just by that passage,
Was enough Water in the Waterbox?

Water is getting there. I must conclude if its enough water.

If i take out the water Hose that goes to the Turbo i can open the water in the hose with my ski not running, right?
Does the water that goes to the mufler came from a Hose that goes to the Turbo or it came directly from the manifold?
then i could see if enought water was coming out from that hose.

There is also the chance that the clog was cleared when i run the ski on the Hose

Well the issue was getting water to the water chamber so it is possible you cleared it at some point. I would put everything back together and run it on the hose. if you are getting water out the exhaust then the clog was cleared and you should be good.

Re: Smoke on the Water - Water Chamber Melted

    Well got the parts.
    Assembled everything.
The Elbow was terrible and melted into the Water Chamber. The water chamber will probably be ok after cleaning. I guess as a spare will be good enough.

On the Hose a lot of water came down from the exhaust when it was idle. At about 4000rpm i guess the water turn into vapor. But after a few seconds idle i could see a lot of water again.
The true test will be in the water.

But my other big concern is that the ski was still running rough with new plugs. After half a minute at 4000rpm it started to run rough.
Changed the air filter and it improved.
Maybe all that white smoke from the melted elbow ruined the filter.
    worried about this.

Anyway its too cold right now. But i will try it on the water next month.
