My msx 150 smokes at idle

I just acquired a used Polaris MSX 150 from a friend. I put it in the water still on the trailer and fired it up. At idle white smoke pours out of the exhaust. When I engage the throttle the smoke goes away. The plugs are clean and the compression is good. Any ideas where to start? The previous owner said it did over heat. I need your help.

Clist it, They're only worth about $20 in scrap and get a real 4 stroke.

Welcome. Rare and expensive-to-fix ski you got there. I'm pretty familiar with them myself. When they run right... they are awesome... great power and great on fuel... in a very well regarded hull (MSX). But being a one-year-only made ski... they never got the bugs worked out and have a number of common issues.

Compression is good... that's a relief... Nicasil plating failure is common.

What does your oil look like? Any signs of water/coolant contamination? Any foamy/milky oil? Are your oil levels right (very easy to overfill if not checked right which leads to oil ingestion and lots of trouble).

Coolant level right? Any oil slick in your coolant jug? Do you see a stream of coolant flowing into the jug when running... increasing in stream with RPMs?

The Weber(engine) doesn't take well to overheating. Did it blow a headgasket? Severe enough overheat will warp the cylinders... it's an open deck, Nikasil plated aluminum block design.

Unbolt the intercooler and push it forward to get to the airbox bolt... then remove the airbox. Inspect the intake to the turbo. Excessive oil there? Wobbly turbo shaft? A blown turbo seal will put oil into the intake.

Pull the rest of the intake hoses and hardpipe. Inspect for excessive oil. Open the throttlebody butterfly and shine a light down into the intake manifold. See any puddle of gunk/oil in there?

      Good place to start.
      Cheers!

Thank you for your response. The oil is clean and shows no sign of water. I have taken the ski for a ride and the boost indicator shows all bars at 51 MPH. On my return ride I did notice a minor surging of the engine and the smoke returned at idle. My next task is to remove and inspect hoses. The inter cooler might be above my technical level. I 'll let you know what I find when I get there.

THANKS FOR TAKING THE TIME TO SHOW ME MINE.

That was probably the last running msx 150 on planet earth.

I still wouldn't mind one because i always thought they were cool. But I am bit of a self sadist.
